Thanks for the mail.
You will recall my making clear several times that before replying
any technical mail, I have to do a lot of home work myself, in order
to arrive at Truth and nothing but Truth. After considering all the
pros and cons of your mail, following is my reply: NO! THERE WAS
ABSOLUTELY (AT LEAST!) NO MESHA ETC. RASHI AND MANGAL, SHANI ETC.
PLANET-
BASED ASTROLOGY PROPAGATED BY ANY RISHI. Following are the reasons
for my conclusion:
1. It has become crystal clear by now that even the earliest pre-
sidhantic astronomical works that we have any information about----
like the Vedanga Jyotisha or Parashara Sidhanta----did not mention
any Mesha etc. Rashis at all nor Mangal, Shani etc. planets. These
works are supposed to be the earliest ones, presumably about 14th
century BCE. Same is the case with that of the Yajur-Jyotisham said
to be a later work of about 12th century BCE.
2. The earliest mention of planets that we find in an unambiguous
manner is in the Athavra Jyotisha of about 5th or 6th century BCE,
as per Bharatiya Jyotisha Shastra of S B Dikshit. Even there he was
not sure that that work could be called Atharva Jyotisha since as
per his own statement, the original work itself did not contain any
such colophon etc. This is what Dikshit has said on page 100
(English translation) of his book, “It is clear from its topics
that this Jyotisha is not so ancient as the Rk or Yajur Jyotisha,
still the old consideration of the fact that if the Meshadi rashis
would have been in vogue in the time of the author of this work,
they would have occurred in the text, leads one to accept that the
Atharva Jyotisha is pretty old and because it is so called, the
author took it for discussion at this place†.
What is surprising is that we do not find any mention of Atharva
Jyotisha in any later works of Jyotisha shastra right from the
earliest available indigenous work of predictive astrology viz.
Brihat Jatakam or Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira (5th century AD) to
even fake Parasharis galore! Similarly, Bhatotpala, in about 9th
century, has not referred to it either though he has referred to
Parashara Samhita and Garga etc. That puts yet another question mark
on this work as to how old it is. Since Varahamihira has referred to
almost all the earlier jyotisha works/authors including Parashara in
his works he would certainly not have ignored Atharva-Jyotisha if he
had had any knowledge about it!
3. Similarly, we have a much “researched†branch of predictive
astrology viz. Jaimini jyotish floating around but ironically,
nobody, not even the “Vedic astrologers†themselves claim that
it is a work by Maharshi Jaimini of Purva MImamsa!
4. Then the next most intriguing question that arises is: With such
crude methods of calculating the simplest phenomena like the
duration of tithi, nakshatra etc. by taking into account just the
rough mean motion of the Moon and the sun and a year of 366 days,
as in the Vedanga Jyotisha and the later Pitamaha Sidhanta etc. of
the Panchasidhantika, how on earth would our ancestors have
calculated the planetary longitudes vis-Ã -vis non-existent Mesha
etc. Rashis?
5. Even if we presume that they calculated the longitudes of planets
vis-Ã -vis nakshatras instead of Mesha etc. Rashis, then again the
same question confronts us: How did they calculate the longitudes of
planets vis-Ã -vis Krittika etc. nakshatras?
Did the nakshattras start from Ashvini as they are supposed to be
these days? No. They started from Krittika in the Vedanga Jyotisha,
nay even as per the Yajurveda! The only way out to calculate the
“longitudes†of planets was that they could have “seen†the
planets “aligned†to some prominent star! For example, when it
was supposed that the Moon was in Krittika nakshatra, most probably
it meant that the Moon was conjunct the Krittika (Alcyone) Star!
But with an unequal dimension of all the prominent stars, it is
impossible that they would have named one day and night (sixty
ghatikas) as comprising one nakshatra! As such, the Vedanga
Jyotisha had to devise a nakshatra division of twenty-seven equal
nakshatras, starting from Krittika since those were the
“nakshatras that did not deviate from the East†those days.
How accurate that “visualization†of planets vis-à -vis the
junction stars would have been can be anybody’s guess! But it is
a certainty that it was impossible to have “seen†any planet in
exact conjunction with any star with just the naked eyes!
6. Even if somehow or other, all these difficulties were surmounted,
with time measuring apparatus like “ghatika yantras†it is
virtually impossible that our ancestors of hoary past would have
been able to record birth times properly/precisely!
7. Then a million dollar question that has to be answered is: Why
would our real Vamadevas go to such absurd lengths to try to mark
the positions of planets vis-Ã -vis junction stars with naked eyes
and then tried to put those planets in the twelve non-existent
rashis just for trying to peep into the future of some Tom, Dick or
Harry?
You have presumed that our “ASTROLOGY was developed as a (sub-)
SHAASTRA (science) in later times by some true Yogi / Maharishi but
you have not quoted even a single authority in favour of your
argument! If we presume that the real Vamadevas wanted us to
consult soothsayers to know as to whether Lalralu or Kalaru would be
the king, I am afraid you are just exhibiting your ignorance of not
only the Yoga Shastras but of all the dharma shastras including the
Manusmriti! Pl. go through these shastras and you will see for
yourself that at every step we have been exhorted (i) “karmanyeva
adhikaraste ma phaleshu kadachanai†or (ii) “uttishthata
Jagrata prapya varan nibodhata, kshurasya dhara nishita guhayam,
durgam pathas tat kavyo vadanti†.
8. There are quite a few “shanti-pathas†in the Vedas, which
request for “sham-no mitrah, sham varunah†etc. etc. Though
those mantras pray for “shanti†from “Dyau shantih, apah
shantih, antarikshyah shantih†etc. etc. I have yet to see any
mantra asking for “shantih†from the much dreaded planets viz.
Mangal and Shani! Of course we find, “sham no brihaspatir
dadhatu†but that Brihaspati is not the dead planet Jupiter
revolving around the sun but the preceptor of Devas before whom even
the sun-god bows in reverence!
9. Talking of Yogashastra, I am sorry to say that you are
presuming things and your presumptions border on hallucinations
sometimes! I wonder whether you have gone through Patanjala Yoga
shastra, the fountain head of Ashtanga yoga! If not, pl. go through
that first and then enter into a discussion saying that some yogi
wanted us to consult soothsayers for looking into our future! For
your ready reference, I may inform you here that Yogashastra warns
us about the dangers of falling into the trap of sidhis like
“prescience†or “clairvoyance†etc. There are such sutras
as “by speaking truth and nothing but truth one gets vak-sidhi†;
“by mastering the breath one gets first hand knowledge of all his
previouis janmas; “by practicing aparigraha, one becomes a master
of all the gems of the world†and so on. However, in no uncertain
terms that shastra admonishes us from being caught in that snare!
These are some rough and ready translations of some of the sutras,
which I am just drawing from my memory!
The above are just some of the reasons which preclude completely any
possibility that our real Vamadevas would like us to become astro-
buffs! It is only today’s Vamadevas and fake Parasharas who want
us to do so and thus make us celebrate our festivals on wrong days!
Regarding your points about Vikrama Era, I will get back to you in a
separate post.
With regards,
Avtar Krishen Kaul

Shri Avtarji,
Namasthe !!!
I have sent your mail regarding Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Forum
Calendar. Let me hope that I get some reply from them, or they
start analysing the whole issue from a new point of view....from
your angle....
Since Maharishi Mahesh Yogi'scalendar mentions something about
Vikramadithya Era (year), is it possible that the year related to
this is correct ? Is there any historical continuity about Emperor
Vikramadithya (who is a hero to me too as is for millions of
others.. ! ). The following article is a bit intriguing, because it
relates to historical references to emperor Vikramadithya in the
arabian circles..... I know that whatever evidences are available
in these parts are not easy to discover because of the PROHIBITIONS
OF DISCOVERING ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT FEW SO-CALLED
REPRESENTATIVES OF GOD ORDAINED. But a genuine peep into the TRUE
HISTORY would settle the world history straight and help your area
of interest, that is the vedic calendar....
You still have not answered my couple of doubts ?

[proudHindu] RE: {UnitedHinduFront} Re: Kaaba-Shiva linga
Namaskar
I recently encountered an incident where an alleged Muslim tried to
denigrate the sacred Shiva linga comparing it to a phallic symbol
and asserting that Hindu women use it as a fertility symbol. I
replied in the following way and revealed to him the true nature of
the most sacred shrine of Islam, the Kaaba. I have not received a
response from him yet, it is hoped that he has not died from shock!
As you are aware, that al-Quran (Koran) states that knowledge is the
lost property of the believer and he should gather it wherever he
can. So what I am about to relay to you is enlightening and already
known to true scholars of Islam.
However if you are a faithful Muslim then it will be a revelation
which will change your entire outlook on the world and Islam. Feel
free to forward this testimony to your fellow brethren.
A recent archaeological find in Kuwait unearthed a gold-plated
statue of
the Hindu deity Ganesh. A Muslim resident of Kuwait requested
historical research material that can help explain the connection
between Hindu civilisation and Arabia. Glancing through some
research material recently, I was pleasantly surprised to come
across a reference to a King Vikramaditya inscription found in the
Kaaba in Mecca proving beyond doubt that the Arabian Peninsula
formed a part of his Indian Empire.
The text of the crucial Vikramaditya inscription, found inscribed on
a gold dish hung inside the Kaaba shrine in Mecca, is found recorded
on page 315 of a volume known as “Sayar-ul-Okul†treasured in
the Makhtab-e-Sultania library in Istanbul, Turkey. Rendered in
simple English the inscription says:
"Fortunate are those who were born (and lived) during king Vikramâ
’s reign. He was a noble, generous dutiful ruler, devoted to the
welfare of his subjects. Nevertheless, at that time we Arabs,
oblivious of God, were lost in sensual pleasures. Plotting and
torture were rampant. The darkness of ignorance had enveloped our
country. As the lamb struggling for her life in the cruel paws of a
wolf us Arabs were caught up in ignorance. The entire country was
enveloped in darkness as intense as on a new moon night. However,
the present dawn and pleasant sunshine of education is the result of
the favour of the noble king Vikramaditya whose benevolent
supervision did not lose sight of us- foreigners as we were. He
spread his sacred religion amongst us and sent scholars whose
brilliance shone like that of the sun from his country to ours.
These scholars and preceptors through whose benevolence we were once
again made cognisant of the presence of God, introduced to His
sacred existence and put on the road of Truth had come to our
country to preach their religion and impart education at
King Vikramaditya’s behest."
If you would like to read the Arabic wording, I reproduce it
hereunder in Roman script:
"Itrashaphai Santu Ibikramatul Phahalameen Karimun Yartapheeha
Wayosassaru Bihillahaya Samaini Ela Motakabberen Sihillaha Yuhee
Quid min howa Yapakhara phajjal asari nahone osirom bayjayhalem.
Yundan blabin Kajan blnaya khtoryaha sadunya kanateph netephi
bejehalin Atadari bilamasa-rateen phakef tasabuhu kaunnieja
majekaralhada walador. As hmiman burukankad toluho watastaru hihila
Yakajibaymana balay kulk amarena phaneya jaunabilamary Bikramatum".
A careful analysis of the above inscription enables us to draw the
following conclusions:
1.
That the ancient Indian empires may have extended
up to the eastern boundaries of Arabia until Vikramaditya and that
it was he who for the first time conquered Arabia. Because the
inscription says that king Vikram who dispelled the darkness of
ignorance from Arabia.
2.
That, whatever their earlier faith, King Vikrama’s preachers had
succeeded in spreading the Vedic (based on the Vedas, the Hindu
sacred scriptures)) way of life in Arabia.
3.
That Indians to the Arabs imparted the knowledge of Indian arts and
sciences directly by founding schools, academies and cultural
centres. The belief, therefore, that visiting Arabs conveyed that
knowledge to
their own lands through their own indefatigable efforts and
scholarship is unfounded.
Having seen the far reaching and history shaking implications of the
Arabic inscription concerning king Vikrama, we shall now piece
together the story of its find. How it came to be recorded and hung
in the Kaaba in Mecca. What are the other proofs reinforcing the
belief that Arabs were once followers of the Indian Vedic way of
life and that tranquillity and education were ushered into Arabia by
king Vikramaditya’s scholars, educationists from an uneasy period
of "ignorance and turmoil" mentioned in the inscription.
In Istanbul, Turkey, there is a famous library called Makhatab-e-
Sultania, which is reputed to have the largest collection of ancient
West Asian literature. In the Arabic, section of that library is an
anthology of ancient Arabic poetry. That anthology was compiled from
an earlier work in A.D. 1742 under the orders of the Turkish ruler
Sultan Salim.
The pages of that volume are of Hareer – a kind of silk used
for writing on. Each page has a decorative gilded border. That
anthology is known as Sayar-ul-Okul. It is divided into three parts.
The first part contains biographic details and the poetic
compositions of pre-Islamic Arabian poets. The second part embodies
accounts and verses of poets of the period beginning just after
Prophet Mohammad’s times, up to the end of the Banee-Um-Mayya
dynasty. The third part deals with later poets up to the end of
Khalif Harun-al-Rashid’s times.
Abu Amir Asamai, an Arabian bard who was the poet Laureate of Harun-
al-Rashid’s court, has compiled and edited the anthology.
The first modern edition of “Sayar-ul-Okul†was printed and
published in Berlin in 1864. A subsequent edition is the one
published in Beirut in 1932.
The collection is regarded as the most important and authoritative
anthology of ancient Arabic poetry. It throws considerable light on
the social life, customs, manners and entertainment modes of ancient
Arabia. The book also contains an elaborate description of the
ancient shrine of Mecca, the town and the annual fair known as OKAJ,
which used to be held every year around the Kaaba temple in Mecca.
This should convince readers that the annual HAJ of the Muslims to
the Kaaba is of earlier pre-Islamic congregation.
However, the OKAJ fair was far from a carnival. It provided a forum
for the elite and the learned to discuss the social, religious,
political, literary and other aspects of the Vedic culture then
pervading Arabia. “Sayar-ul-Okul†asserts that the conclusion
reached at those discussions was widely respected throughout Arabia.
Mecca, therefore, followed the Varanasi tradition (of India) of
providing a venue for important discussions among the learned while
the masses congregated there for spiritual bliss. The principal
shrines at both Varanasi in India and at Mecca in Arvasthan (Arabia)
were Shiva temples. Even to this day ancient Mahadev (Shiva) emblems
can be seen. It is the Shankara (Shiva) stone that Muslim pilgrims
reverently touch and kiss in the Kaaba - black stone (al-Hajar-ul-
Aswad).
Arabic tradition has lost trace of the founding of the Kaaba temple.
The discovery of the Vikramaditya inscription affords a clue. King
Vikramaditya is known for his great devotion to Lord Mahadev
(Shiva). At Ujjain (India), the capital of Vikramaditya, exists the
famous shrine of Mahakal, i.e., of Lord Shankara (Shiva) associated
with Vikramaditya.
Since according to the Vikramaditya inscription he spread the Vedic
religion, who else but he could have founded the Kaaba temple in
Mecca?
A few miles away from Mecca is a big signboard that bars the entry
of any non-Muslim into the area. This is a reminder of the days when
the
Kaaba was stormed and captured solely for the newly established
faith of Islam.
The object in barring entry of non-Muslims was obviously to prevent
its
recapture.
As the pilgrim proceeds towards Mecca, he is asked to shave his head
and beard and to don special sacred attire that consists of two
seamless sheets of white cloth. One is to be worn round the waist
and the other over the shoulders. Both these rites are remnants of
the old Vedic practice of entering Hindu temples clean- and with
holy seamless white sheets.
The main shrine in Mecca, which houses the Shiva emblem, the black
stone (al-Hajar-ul- Aswad) and the entire cuboidal

Thanks for the above mail
I visited the site

globalgoodnews.com/vedic/02.html but
with due deference to all concerned, I must say I was highly
disappointed to
see the so called Vedic Calendar 2008. There is actually nothing
Vedic
about the same, because of the following reasons:
1. There is absolutely no indication of any Vedic solar month
like
Madhu, Madhava etc.
2. There is absolutely no indication of any Vedic lunar month
like
Magha, Phalguna etc. either!
3. The most important phenomena, which are the corner stones of
all the
Vedas and Puranas etc., viz. the Uttarayana (Winter Solstice),
Dakshinayana
(Summer Solstice), Vasant Sampat (Vernal Equinox) and Hemant Sampat
(Autumn
Equinox) also are conspicuous by their absence in the so called Vedic
Calendar for 2008.
4. What is all the more surprising is that none of the six
Vedic ritus
(seasons) has been shown in this entire Vedic calendar (sic!)! The
calendar
makers have forgotten the Vedic statements like "samvatsarah
ritubhir hi
shaknoti sthatum". The famous Purusha Sukta of the Rigveda is in
fact a hymn
to the seasons in the form of Purusha!
5. On the other hand, all the "almighty" Lahiri Sankrantis like
(Lahiri) Mesha, (Lahiri) Vrisha etc. have been shown with zest, and
as is
common knowledge by now, these rashis (astrological signs) are just
imaginary twelve equal divisions imported from Grecho-Chaldean
astrologers
through the Surya Sidhanta of Maya the mlechha and retained in a much
degenerated form by the so called Vedic astrologers just for their
astrological gimmicks! They have no sanction from any shastra, nor
even
Primary School level geography!
6. Like all the other "almighty" Lahiri Panchangas, Pitramvasya
was to
be celebrated on October 10/11, 2007 as per this "Vedic calendar" as
well,
which was actually the day of Dipavali as per all the shastras!
7. Sharadiya Navratras were to be started from October 12,
2007, as per
this Panchanga also when actually they should have been started on
September
12, 2007.
8. As you know, all these travesties of Dharma are taking place
because
we have "postponed" all the lunar months by one month as on date,
thanks to
"Lahiri" jyotishis! If we continue to follow such an adharma, a
time will
come when we will be celebrating Sharadiya Navratras in Vasnta Ritu
and
Vasanti Navratras in Sharad Ritu and so on!
9. Ironically, even the Lahiri Panchangas do mention the days of
Uttarayana, Dakshinayana and Vedic Madhu, Madhava etc., whether or
not they
follow those days themselves! As such, this "Vedic calendar" has
surpassed
even the Lahiri Panchangas in eliminating the real Vedic phenomena!
In a nutshell, this so calendar Vedic Calendar is more disappointing
than
any other calendar since it is supposed to have been prepared by
Vedic and
Pauranic scholars!

Vedic Calendar on the Internet
In Vedic Civilization-civilization in accord with Natural Law-every
day is a
celebration of the Divine within man. With the dawn of each new day,
a
different quality of Nature's Intelligence awakens within us.
Each day is influenced by the movements of the planets, stars-the
whole
galactic universe-and it is the Laws of Nature that give this
direction to
time*-each day, each hour, each minute, each second.
All of the Laws of Nature are described in the ancient Vedic texts as
Devata-impulses of Creative Intelligence-lively in every grain of
creation.
These values of Creative Intelligence are displayed in our Vedic
Calendar as
figurative illustrations.
For example, the day in the Vedic Calendar with the quality of
Creative
Intelligence expressed as Shiva is associated with the quality of
infinite
silence. The day with the quality of Creative Intelligence expressed
by the
name Maha Lakshmi is associated with the quality of fullness,
affluence-infinite intelligence and creativity that constitutes the
nature
of the Unified Field, which evolved the life of the entire cosmos.
< span style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt;COLOR: black;">Every day is a
celebration in
the Vedic Calendar year. Every day is different from every other day-
the
rising sun, the setting sun, the moon's phases, the influence of the
planets, and the influence of the near and distant stars.
The values of Creative Intelligence celebrated in the Vedic Calendar
are
Nature's Intelligence that characterize the specific qualities of
the days,
months, and changing seasons. Celebrating these qualities of Nature's
Intelligence means enlivening them in one's self and one's
environment, and
when these values are enlivened, everything in life blossoms in its
fullness.
It is a physical phenomenon that attention enlivens the object of at
tention; therefore attention on the fine impulses of
intelligence-celebrating those values-enlivens them and they enrich
life.

* The Vedic Calendar on this site highlights the most popular
celebration
days of the Vedic Calendar Year (Samvatsar). The days of the Vedic
Calendar
are called 'Tithis'. In Vedic timekeeping, a 'Tithi' is a lunar day,
or the
time it takes for the longitudinal angle between the moon and the
sun to
increase by twelve degrees.
'Tithis' begin at varying times of day and vary in duration from
approximately nineteen to approximately twenty-six hours.
The thirty 'Tithis' in each lunar month are indicated on the Vedic
Calendar
of this site.
More detailed values of the Vedic Calendar which bring to light the
lunar
days with reference to the twenty-seven lunar constellations
(Nakshatras),
the twelve signs of the zodiac (Rashis), and further dividsions of
time, are
not mentioned in this calendar.
Traditionally the Vedic Calendar is calculated with reference to
