Take a look at the attached flyer. There are many great PD opportunities this summer. I have gone to several of the Restorative PD's and they are really interesting and helpful. Please consider going!

Upcoming PD:

· Attached is the OSEL Summer Institute Flyer and registration information. It will be held August 8th-11th at Whitney Young High School.

· For schools that have an Advisory period or plan to have one next year:

OSEL will offer structured planning time this summer for school teams to work together to plan or fine-tune their Advisory curriculum and schedule. We invite schools to put together a team of at least 2 and no more than 6 people and register for these sessions. Space is limited, so please sign up as soon as possible, before the opportunity is offered more widely.

***Schools must have a designated Advisory period during SY2016-2017 to register for these sessions.***

When you register, you will be registered for all 3 days. Each day will be at Whitney Young High School.

· Monday, August 8, 8:30am-11:30am

· Tuesday, August 9, 8:30am-11:30am

· Wednesday, August 10, 8:30am-11:30am

Participants must plan to be present for all 3 days to earn CPDUs. Exceptions will be made for counselors, as this overlaps with the OSCPA Summer Institute.

To register: Search course code 32714 or "OSEL Advisory Summer" on the Learning Hub.

Participants who are not 52-week employees will be paid for their time* at the non-instructional rate.

*Will be paid given our projected budget for next year. This is prioritized, but please know that if we find we are not able to pay participants, we will contact them with advanced notice and they will be able to drop the course if they choose.

Tools & Resources:

· Though our OSEL team and partners offer Youth Mental Health First Aid, it is difficult for many teachers and administrators to be excused from school buildings for the entire day.  The Online Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Training is a wonderful alternate resource.  Please note that this free training ends June 30th.

Online Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Training Ends June 30

All Illinois schools are pre-enrolled at no cost in online mental health and suicide prevention training available from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). IDPH received federal funding to support a statewide program to train ALL school personnel (middle school through higher education) on how to identify, approach, and refer students showing signs of psychological distress using an innovative online training simulation.

Courses for K-12 faculty/staff

1.      At-Risk for High School Educators

2.      At-Risk for Middle Schools (elementary staff may also find this training useful)

3.      Step In, Speak Up! – Supporting LGBTQ Students

To take any of the available courses:

1.      Go to: http://illinois.kognito.com/.

2.      Click on “Train Now” under Trainings Available.

3.      Create a New Account if you are a new user or sign in if you have an account established. (Users can go back to take the trainings at any point to revisit the materials.)

·         You will be asked to identify the school you represent. Choose “Other” if you work with multiple schools or are a partner agency.

4.      Take the brief pre-training survey, followed by the training, which is about 50 minutes and may be completed in multiple sittings.

5.      Please also take the post training survey to assist in the program evaluation.

6.      Print your certificate of completion.

· The Illinois Writing Project is hosting a workshop July 18-20 on Writing and Social Emotional Learning. Workshop description: At the heart of this workshop is a recognition of the power of writing and reading to create classrooms and schools where social emotional learning flourishes. This workshop offers suggestions, activities, and dialogue about social emotional learning that doesn't gobble up our students' time but creates a classroom where learning and the love of learning is nurtured. And this workshop supports existing school-wide programs as well. The flyer is attached.

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are making the most of your summer and are thoroughly enjoying the heat. Remember, you will be craving it in January!

I am sharing the SEL Summer Institute schedule with you because there are some really great PD's that will help support the work you do. The institute runs from Monday, 8-8-16 to Thurs. 8-11 at Whitney Young. There are several Restorative Practices sessions, Alternatives to Suspension, Responding to Defiance and Disrespect. On Monday, there is a 'Cultivating Adult Growth Mindsets' that will tie in to our CIWP-Culture for Learning.

Please consider going to some of the sessions. It is a great way to earn (cpdu's) and learn.

Hope to see you there! Make sure to register on Learning Hub.
