I come from an air pollution background and my question today, related to generator sets, is limited to emissions from them. Though the problem is much bigger than that.
Here is a case study from Gurgaon, once a satellite city of Delhi and now part of the National Capital Region of Delhi - "A booming suburb of New Delhi has become the symbol for development in
India. It seems to have everything, except a functioning citywide sewer,
reliable electricity or water, or decent roads."

From the New York Times, June 8th, 2011
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/09/world/asia/09gurgaon.html"To
compensate for electricity blackouts, Gurgaon’s companies and real
estate developers operate massive diesel generators capable of powering
small towns. No water? Drill private borewells. No public
transportation? Companies employ hundreds of private buses and taxis.
Worried about crime? Gurgaon has almost four times as many private
security guards as police officers"

Besides the power bill from the grid, the CWG venues also used 24 DG sets, of 82.5 KVA capacity each at the stadiums for
broadcasting sport events as well as other requirements.

We have established urban emissions inventories (PM, SO2, NOx, CO, and VOC) for some cities in India - the sources are all the same, so we extend the courtesy to CO2 as well. Cities include - Delhi (much of this work is currently in use for the day to day forecasting of air quality in NCR -
http://www.urbanemissions.info/daqi), Chennai, Ahmedabad, Indore, Surat, Pune, and Hyderabad.
One source we find very uncertain and underestimated (most of the times) is generator sets. We made some calls to big hotels, malls, hospitals, institutions and apartments, (especially in the Gurgaon and NOIDA sectors) and some markets, to get a sense of how much diesel is consumed in this sector and we calculate the related emissions. The five sectors mentioned above tend to be major operators of in-situ generator sets. Our estimated percentage contribution of generator sets to the PM emissions in the seven cities varied from 5-12% of the annual load.
Question -
Any of you ever talked about or discussed or saw some reports on
1. diesel usage in generator sets
2. average emission rates (any measurement data, especially for non-CO2 pollutants)
Looking forward to hearing from you all.
With regards,
Sarath
