Hi, all -- I just posted a compilation of many tips and recommendations for exporting in MapKnitter:

As new people show up in our community with questions about this, please add to this resource yourselves!

By the way -- exporting is still very resource intensive, so please don't ALL go right now to MapKnitter and start exporting at once.

One more thing -- I've made a page listing current ongoing exports, so if you are having trouble, or the site is slow, check this page out to see if someone else is exporting a HUGE map -- let's be cooperative, folks!

Now that you can comment on maps, you might also take it upon yourself to help other users of MapKnitter who are struggling to export a map; point them at the above tips and make them feel welcome!

The list of pending exports is super-useful. thanks Jeff! And also the mapknitter exporting wiki page.
It is also a great way to directly compare your number of images and resolution with other maps.

I'm going to add another feature which will prompt you to do something if your map takes more than 4 hours to upload. https://github.com/publiclab/mapknitter/issues/157

And it'd be nice if it emailed you when the map was done. https://github.com/publiclab/mapknitter/issues/149

That's a good idea.
That reminds me to this site http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ that generates files readeable for you GPS and tells you where you are in the queue, and then emails you the link.
