Thanks to everyone who's helped support Public Lab's Balloon Mapping Kits campaign this month, by posting #balloonselfies on Twitter and Instagram -- which is a lot of fun.

It's awesome to see so many people's stories, and we'll continue posting them as the campaign continues. Reach out if you'd like to share, and we'd be happy to shout out about your work!

This week we're calling Squid Week at Public Lab -- celebrating and having fun with the squid-shaped kite in our new Mini Kite Kit -- see attached image.

Mapping Parties

I wanted to put out the idea that, on some of the great summer days we're having, folks may want to take the opportunity to get together and hold Mapping Parties over the 4th of July weekend, or just in the next few weeks.

I'm definitely going to be flying a kite -- give a shout out if you are too or would like to join others in your area! Regional discussion lists are a great place to reach out: publiclab.org/lists

Best,
Jeff

Awesome, Miriam -- I've just sent one to the NOLA PL office, should arrive Friday. A squid kite, not a beer :-)

Also sent a small camera with a waterproof enclosure in case Scott wants to map (joking joking).

Wish I could be there! I'm trying to do a kite mapping with Parts & Crafts here in Somerville on Friday, though, so we'll have our own fun.

Hi all - I'm going to kite map on Monday evening at Prospect Hill Park in Somerville, at 630pm. It should be beautiful out!

Reply to the plots-boston list if you'd like to join!

Hi ya'll, if you're doing balloon aerials this weekend, we'd love a single or series of shots for our Field Photo Weekend-- it's a national project where we take landscape change photos on long weekends and compare them to precip and drought data.

Just head over to ISeeChange.org and submit some pics under the Landscape investigation.

HAPPY 4th and Squid week!

ps-Miriam and Scott, you're welcome to come over for backyard bayou beer--balloons or no. Cheers, Julia

Great! I'm down for Bayou St. John Wetland or (slight preference for) Bayou Bienvenue. I could go Saturday or Sunday - what time you thinking?

Hi, all - we had a great time in Somerville on Monday evening's kite mapping party; over a dozen people came out to map, and we flew all kinds of kites -- squid shaped, frog shaped, ghost-shaped, and the classic 9-foot delta kites as the wind died down.

The photos look great, though we weren't doing that much to point them downward so they're pretty "normal" looking pointed out towards Boston as the sun set. Not so much "mapping" pictures but still real nice!

One camera fell onto pavement from ~60-70 feet up, because I tied it wrong. (oops!) But it survived! The shock-proof case on those GoPro alternatives is really pretty good.

Thanks everyone for coming out! We'll share some photos on the Public Lab instagram.
