Many of us are interested in Android Development.  We are not entirely sure how to go about gaining this experience.  One thing that I do know for sure...there is no better experience to be gained than to do as oppose to listen to a presenter.

I have some ideas of what the Android Xperience can be about?  I would definitely like to hear your ideas as well.  Here are some of my goals:

* Everyone who participates will have the opportunity to develop an Android Application
* Similar to the "Get your Hands Dirty with Ruby" format, we can earn our way progressively to developing a fully fledged application
* Break out into different teams working on one project each, spend some time hacking, then come back and share with everyone what you learned
* Let's dedicate this summer of GRJUG Meetings to furthering the Anroid Xperience (no more lectures, just pure Android Development for the next 3-6 months)

This is a work in progress and I am asking for everyone's thoughts and ideas.

Thanks
Carlus

I think this sounds great. I'll have to brainstorm some possible projects.

I love this idea. In GRMobileDev, there are a lot of inexperienced developers looking for ways to learn, and I think they'll be interested in this format.

Some ideas:

You probably have a meeting place lined up already, but we took a tour of the Open Device Lab on the 3rd floor of the San Chez building downtown. The Android Xperience would fit in with what they are doing there. You could try your app on many different Android devices for free.

FriendlyCode (the Grand Rapids brigade of Code for America) is working on exposing various GR City datasets and APIs. These could make for an interesting starting point for the beginner apps. Right now we just have the Viget (GR city wiki) API, but even just that has some possibilities.

Carlus,

I like this idea very much. This will provide an opportunity for those who want gain hands on expr in Android dev.

We can come up with real world issues or problems (may be to solve social issues or non-profit org issues) using Android solution.

Teams can choose problems to solve during the 3-6 month period.

I am willing to be part of this effort.

Thanks,
Murali.

I really love the idea of the JUG collaborating with Friendly Code to build social good apps!

We should try to coordinate a joint meetup in the near future.

I'm excited about this idea.  I'd love to work on such a project.  I'd suggest a couple options for a project:

  • Since Aquinas is hosting the group, see if we can build an app for the school.  Perhaps something that will facilitate common student activities.
  • Contact a local charity/ non-profit organization to develop something that would help them.  I'd like to see if we could build something for CompRenew.
  • Find a niche - find something on the IOS platform that doesn't exist on Android and create an Android version of that application with all the custom features and behavior that the group is interested in implementing.
