Hello dear seniors,
I have a question why I didn't find answered, so if you guys, anyone here, could help me out.
I am in my Junior year in ICE.

Say, I did a research project on 'renewable sources of energy', and I wish to do an MS in Robotics. So,
1. Does this make a difference? If yes, what kind of a justification am I supposed to have?
2. How big a factor is this when I am writing my SoP?

Basically, I wanted to know what questions am I faced with if I wanted a change in my research areas.

Do you guys know anyone who faced a similar problem, or any kind of advice would be of great help.
Thank you.

Sincerely
Ashish Banerjee

You don't have to justify trying different things. I don't think it makes a difference , you can just emphasize what you want more in your SOP.

Your SOP should be like a coherent representation of what you did and  what you learnt from it , doing different things you can try and tie them together to portray the development of your interests. Most research is inter disciplinary anyway and people take different paths to do different things. Do what you like and not what you want to put on an essay.

None.

Most people who apply have a varied bunch of projects. Very few people know what they want to do from the start. I regret not trying more things as an undergraduate.

A small pointer to add to a great answer by Abhishek sir:
While its a good thing that you might've worked on different research interests, it's important that you stick to a problem long enough and make sustained efforts.

It's perfectly alright to work in different areas in the beginning, but try not to leave a lot of projects midway without applying yourself properly.

Your work ethic/ teamwork/ generic research skills can be portrayed in a positive manner doing diverse projects, but the opposite may also be true if there is a *lot* of unfinished work in your profile.

+1 to the part of finishing things.

Hi,
I agree with Abishek sir on trying various fields in undergrad life.
Well in ur SOP u should link what u did in undergrad to the course u r applying. As research is usually interdisciplinary, u will definitely find something u did in ur project that u can explain and can help u in grad education.
If u can find nothing to correlate and u want to talk abt it in ur SOP, u can den talk abt wat it taught u or what qualities u achieved from doing it that can help u in ur grad studies.
