noob question

Before I go diving down rabbit holes, Herself bought me an RTL-SDR DVB-T+DAB+FM+SDR RTL2832U R820T2 TCXO+BIAS T+HF dongle for Christmas, just plugged it in and gqrx didn't like it, refreshed the settings, gqrx picked it up as an RFSPACE Net-SDR receiver, but when I run gqrx, I get nothing on any frequency.

I'm pretty sure I'm missing something obvious, haven't used gqrx in quite a while. I know the dongle works, I've run dump1090 with it just fine.

Somebody throw me a bone here?

What does Gqrx say when you start it from the command line?
In particular, the "built-in source types" output would be interesting.

Oh, I did miss that.

Have you installed Gqrx and OsmoSDR from the repository or have you
compiled it yourself? If you have built it yourself, rebuilding Gqrx and
OsmoSDR would probably resolve the problem.

Pretty sure I did it from the repo but not sure, it was about a year ago. Would you recommend building from source?

Looks like OsmoSDR is built from source (0.1.5git version), but it could
be that some distributions package newer versions. The latest release is
0.1.4. and it is from 2014.
Csete also has (or had) versions with patches not merged upstream.

Updating everything (and rebuilding, if built from source) is certainly
not a bad idea.

You need to build librtl-sdr also from git because osmosdr uses newer api calls.

Ok, guys... I'm not sure how you arrived at the need to build anything
from source, but as Alexander pointed out, you just have to select the
correct device in the list:

Realtek RTL2838UHIDIR SN: 00000001

The other devices are always listed because they can not be probed by
the backend. So, it appears that you have simply selected the wrong
type of SDR and got an error because there was no connection to it.

PS: The Ubuntu PPA uses gr-osmosdr from git + some of my patches to
add PlutoSDR and Airspy HF+ support, hence the git version number.

Oh, I got it now:

It is correct that you have an incompatible librtlsdr loaded, but that
could be because you have had it before you installed out libraries
from the PPA. Please make sure you only install from one source

No, something is still not right, this new dongle is getting to be more trouble than it's worth. THe only reason I asked her to get it for me was I couldn't get the nooelec HamItUp to function properly. Dongle did, but I couldn't get it to give me HF frequencies. Anyway, I'm still getting the rtlsdr_set-bias_tee error. I did a purge of librtlsdr-dev, followed the directions at http://gqrx.dk/download/install-ubuntu and got pretty much the same again when I started gqrx:

You should have librtlsdr0_0.5.3.17 installed from the PPA (no -dev is
necessary for runtime)

If you have that and still get an that error you do have another
version installed. Look in /usr/local/lib/

And I followed this:

In addition to:
$ sudo apt-get install librtlsdr0
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
librtlsdr0 is already the newest version (0.5.3.17-myriadrf1~xenial).

There were also files from an older release:

/usr/local/lib/librtlsdr.so
/usr/local/lib/librtlsdr.so.0.5git
/usr/local/lib/librtlsdr.so.0

After deleting them and running ldconfig all if working now.

Finally got this solved, purged EVERYTHING, including all librtlsdr libraries again, did a complete reinstall again, this time it works. The key was removing all librtlsdr libraries from /usr/local/lib BEFORE doing the install. So now gqrx comes up, but for some reason it only tunes down to 24MHz.

I figure I'm missing something obvious, yet again, the product description says:

Can tune from 500 kHz to 1.7 GHz and has up to 3.2 MHz (2.4 MHz stable) of instantaneous bandwidth. (HF reception below 24 MHz runs in direct sampling mode)

So how do I set direct sampling mode? I'd like to monitor all ham HF freqs, but most of all I hang on 40m.

It's a magic parameter on the device config string, and was a real PITA
to dig up last time I tried this. I don't use it regularly, because the
RTL SDR isn't really a very good receiver in direct sample mode; I get
much better results with an upconverter.

That said, it does work to some degree. Lemme see if I can dig it out;
I've got that information _somewhere_ around here...
