Normally working in PCLinuxOS and experimenting with gnurradio installation.  While I am a Linux user technical details regarding compiling soon overwhelms me but I can follow instructions.  I have very limited success with grc based on gnuradio 3.6.4 (available in PCLinuOS64 repo) but as soon as I looked at gqrx I needed to get 3.7.7.1.

To cut it short I have downloaded the Ubuntu livedvd for GnuRadio and have it running but Ubuntu is a bit 'uncomfortable' to me.  I have a fair idea where gqrx is located but how do I get it started.

I am looking around in this mailing list but not had luck to guess yet.  My apologies for such a simple question.

I am not particularly familiar with the Ubuntu desktop, but you should
be able to start gqrx the same way you start any other program. If for
some reason gqrx is not listed in the applications menu, you can try
to search for it, or open a terminal and type gqrx.

Thank you Alex, you have confirmed that it ought to work by using the 'applications' listing.  I will go back and start up the dvd and try again specificly looking at the applications, I may have missed something.  I am familiar with terminal operation and have located the 'gqrx'. files.

The gnuradio applications manager, 'pybombs' which I have been trying to apply  in PCLinuxOS I have become friendly with its operation and I thought using the gnuradio livedvd had to be a surefire way that everything would work. Apparently not for me but that is just another challenge. Having all the files on a dvd I expected would avoid having to install from source (well internet source).

I am digressing a bit sorry, will get DVD started.

Ok, I went through the Ubuntu liveDVD with gr-3.7.7.1 and still not finding an easy way like a shortcuts to all the goodies, perhaps this is how it is.  On the webpage about gnuradio livedvd there is some description of where in the file tree you can expect the various items.

Anyway I find that on the running livedvd there is /src directory in which gqrx is one of the subdirectories:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~/src/gqrx$  gqrx

Above line did start gqrx and after a bit of playing around with setting up for using rtl2832 dongle I works, what I have looks good and I am trying to familiarise myself with the operation.

I can set the dongle gain manually and I think agc on the dongle works too, certainly locked out changing the manual settings.

I am testing using wideband fm and various trims on this, as I have a strong FM station and few weaker to give me and idea.  The commercial FM player/Radio I use as a reference, it has reasonable speakers.

There is noise which I would describe as crakle/pop is intrucive but I don't think this is gqrx.

Since I started in a user terminal I noticed that the terminal buffer overflowed with two lots of lines

Probably nothing to bother about, at least not for me at this stage

The following shows I have changed working directory to the subdirectory gqrx and then called the program gqrx.

ubuntu@ubuntu:~/src/gqrx$  gqrx

This started a running gqrx just needing front end configuration to my dongle
Conclusion: If you know how to, it is very easy to get a version of gqrx to start from the gnuradio liveDVD. So far it seems I am missing something or it is meant for people who knows.  The main focus of the livedvd gr/grc (gnuradio and gnuradio-companion)

I had a bit of luck finding a copy of Kali-Linuxwhich also comes with an earlier version of gqrx 2.1 . Running off a liveUSB copy of Kali I had to find the gqrs start point.
/usr/bin/gqrx with a bit configuring again and gqrx was up and running.

Funny it was my impression that audio was better in that very little crakcle/pop, compared favourably with the commercal station in my headphones.

If I knew how to make screen copy in Kali I would attach a picture.

I just figured out how to do screen capture in Kali so I will attach the picture of running two different FM local frequencies.
I am running on a Toshiba Tecra A11 Laptop, 4 GB memory
