Is there only a small number of fields that the system will save?  Will it save for example, user filter width settings?  Is there a list of all the entries that can be saved?

Yes, meaning that not everything is saved.

Yes, it will save the filter settings, except the filter shape if I
remember correctly.

Only in the source code.
