Why is maps.google.com so much smoother than the V3 api?

Hi

I have noticed that the maps available at maps.google.com are far smoother and have more features than those available in the V3 api.

Notably smooth zoom and the ability to pan and zoom in an animated fashion from one point to another even if its not within the screen bounds.

Will this come in the API at some point? Is it in there already but I need to enable something?

Hi Chris,

I also notice the same thing and get wonder. 

I believe maps.google.com are using WebGL which gives this smother feeling.
