Splunk allows the building of generic charts, reports and tables based on application-log strings.

Is this possible in Stackdriver?

If not, what is the recommended way of building application-level dashboards in GCP?

Using the logs is ideal in decoupling the dashboard from the application, but if there is another way, I'd like to know.

Hi Joshua,

While not offering the same level of customization as Splunk does with its charts and other data visualization elements, Google Stackdriver provides several features to organize and view valuable logs from your Cloud and other applications.

For example, you can build a Stackdriver dashboard using the Monitoring feature and add a chart that would display your defined Log-based Metrics. These metrics need to be created in advance using the filters on the Logging feature of Stackdriver. Another functionality that might interest you, is Stackdriver Tracing through which it is possible to create reports describing requests' latency made to your applications.

Lastly, note that Stackdriver Logging supports easy integration with Splunk and several other technology partners as described here and referenced on this third-party site.

Link broken. Maybe this
To summarize, if I want a simple graph on the occurrences of a given  application-specific log string (in that example, stores/daily_sales, though most likely Stackdriver would be used for more technical metrics), I can do that in Stackdriver.
