I've search for quite some time on a good setup for viewing logs within Intellij when using the local server.  The only solution I have is to view logs via the output of the console.  Is there a better way?  Would be great to have search, level filtering, regex, etc

App Engine is so close to being an awesome dev experience.  little things like these keep people from getting started IMO.  Been getting better.  Hopeful dev experience and tooling (plugins for gradle & intellij) continue to improve.

Hello Patrick,

The same company that created IntelliJ can provide you with a proper tool to view logs in an organized way: PyCharm

IntelliJ also supports it, and a dedicated manual can be downloaded from the Company's site. General information on the subject can be found on the "Working with Server Run/Debug Configurations" page

Thanks for the reply, but still no luck getting this set up.  I have read the docs, and the link you send.  The link merely describes the fields for run configurations.  I understand to enable logging you point the run configuration to the log file.  However, GAE dev server does not save to a file.

When you execute a local configuration, IntelliJ IDEA, among other things, starts the server. Configurations are stored and managed by IntelliJ, not the server. The app engine server is listed among the supported ones. You should be able to reach your goals reading the downloadable manual.
