Barbara Flynn Currie's Decision

Dear Neighbors,
As many of you now know, State Representative Barbara Flynn Currie has announced her decision to not run for reelection next year. After nearly forty years representing our neighborhoods and the South side, Barbara is certainly entitled to return to a more normal life with her family and friends, but it should not go unrecognized that her political career has been one of unprecedented accomplishments and in the finest tradition of Hyde Park public servants, such as Paul Douglas and Len Despres. I am sure she will receive many accolades along the way, but let's be sure she hears them from her neighbors and constituents first.

Well, I haven't had to look at candidates for a very long time.  It has been great during early childhood crisis times to just say to my colleagues "My rep is Barbara Flynn Currie and she will do the right thing."  For years she has supported children and families, and the early childhood system in Illinois.  Thanks!  Looking forward to hearing what the next project is.

As someone who worked on Barbara's first campaign, the one she 'lost'  and then won after all, I have found it very meaningful to have her as my Representative all these years.  Barbara's informed, clear, and clearly expressed opinions set a very high standard.  We can hope that other political leaders will follow her example, but somehow I don't truly feel hopeful.

I am very grateful for Barbara Flynn Currie representing my neighborhood of Woodlawn since 1979 when my family moved into Woodlawn as part of an urban ministry project of University Church on 57th Street and University Avenue, when Rev. Harvey Lord was minister.  With Barbara's sustained attention for decades, Pat Wilcoxen and our community on 61st and Woodlawn Avenue, addressed affordable housing as an important issue in Woodlawn in the 1990's as abandoned buildings were rehabbed.  In 2014, we left Woodlawn to live in an elevator building in Hyde Park.  I hope Jay Mulberry will allow this Good Neighbors member to say "I am positive that the residents of Woodlawn are grateful as well for Barbara representing them in Springfield."  

There are also sections of South Shore and further south to 117th that are included in Barbara's 25th District.  I have attached the district map to expand the number of grateful citizens.

I have been proud and pleased to call Barbara a classmate (college), but have long been jealous of those good neighbors who were fortunate enough to be represented by her. I used to stop into her office to beg to be gerrymandered into her district (never happened). I continue to stop in--to visit and talk politics, among other things. We all have profited from her dedication and commitment to service. I know we all wish her the best, but selfishly wish we could keep her in place.
