Dears,

Warm greetings.

It is my pleasure to inform you that the Core Group coordinating the annual Festival of Plants and Flowers organized by the GREEN HERITAGE Eco Club of SFX School campus, Siolim, Bardez-Goa, met at the school on Monday 08 July, 2013, under the chairmanship of Principal Fr. Paul Sagayam MSFS and Headmaster Fr. Santow John MSFS.

The event will be held from Saturday, 31 August, 2013 to Monday, 02 September, 2013 , to give two working days for the school students to benefit from the exhibition, competition and projects.

The theme of the event this year is "Home Grown Local Vegetables"

The projects for two categories [ Std IX & SSC and Std. XI & Std XII HSS] will be on the theme "Medicinal Value of Local Vegetables". Each project will consist of a poster, live exhibits [potted plant and products] and an oral explanation by a two member student team. This is open to all schools [High and Higher Secondary Schools] across Goa.

A suggested reference book is "GROWING VEGETABLES ORGANICALLY" published in 2010 by the Green Heritage Eco Club with the support of Green Essentials, Taleigao, and edited by Miguel Braganza. Copies are available on sale at the school, Other India Bookstore, Mapusa; Varsha Book Stall, near Azad Maidan Panaji and Green Essentials, Taleigao. One can also refer to its precussor book published in 1994, except for the fact that we no longer recommend the use of poisonous insecticides for killing insects quickly and killing ourselves slowly through migraine headaches, tumours, ulcers and cancer.

Monsoon vegetables include the Cucurbits .... and we celebrate the "Taoxeachem Fest" at Santan-Talaulim at the end of this month .... Ladyfinger [we have our own 12 inch long Sath-xiramcho bhendo and the 18 inch long "Elephant's Tusk" bhendo from Kottayam-Kerala, besides the purple and red Ladyfingers from Bangalore grown in Goa], Sword Beans, Cluster Beans, Tapioca, Alocasia, Radish, Drumstick, Red Amaranthus and even mushrooms.

There will be a separate category for herbs and spices like onion, chilies, ginger, pepper, turmeric, coriander and mint.

There will be on-the-spot Vegetable Carving Competition for students of Std. IX and SSC, open to all schools across Goa.

The Vegetable Cooking Competition is exclusively for the parents of students at the SFX  Schools and HSS, Siolim.

On Sunday 01 September, 2013, there will be a workshop at 10.30 A.M. on "GROWING FRUIT PLANTS AND VEGETABLES IN POTS" conducted by Green Essentials with Miguel Braganza. Prior registration is necessary for this workshop.

There will be a display of potted vegetables and fruit plants at the event.

Members of the net groups for plant lovers are requested to volunteer display of their home-grown local vegetables as their contribution to educating the GenX and GenY about the traditional vegetables of Goa. We are specially looking out for "Faglam" [Wild Gourd], "Ankur" [Acrostichum sp fern], "Suran" [Yam], "Karanne" [Dioscorea sp], etc and other uncommon vegetables.

While we move into Shravan, do not forget to eat Kurdu or Kuddukichi bhaji and the humble Cassia tora or Talkulichi bhaji for better health and lower diabetes levels.

We are looking for participation from schools all over Goa in larger numbers than the record of 28 schools thus far. With this event, we are 21 years old and into the 22nd show ...every year without fail.

Mog asundi

Dear ,

Warm greetings from a rainy Goa after the fruity action feast of St. John the Baptist or "Sao Joao" in Goa.

I was in Siolim, the village where this ancient tradition was revived in 1992, the same year we launched the "Festival of Plants & Flowers" in the nearby SFX High & Higher Secondary School on 15 August. We will have the 22nd show this year of the plant festival, too.
