I'm in the early stages of a different type of build. This will be a rather slow process as there are a number of unique challenges facing me. I
hesitate to even share until further along but a good friend (Wally) thinks some may appreciate watching. Just a warning, it may never come to
fruition but the journey should be fun.

I'm building new rear control arms for the 'project' GMC and have been working on a method to make the brakes work as a reaction arm setup. This sends
the braking action straight to the frame instead of the tire/control arm and makes a tremendous difference in stopping distances- nearly drops
stopping distance 50% over the stock system. It's been quite a challenge so far...

It's great to see well thought through approaches to issues we all share. Like having the engine too close to the driver.

Interesting solution to combining several improvements into a tight package.
I’m quite curious to see how you will build the actual suspension arm. To minimize flexing, it will take a stout piece.

Nicely done. It will be interesting to see if those arms will flex and then return to position any better than the OE units after encountering road obstacles.

Perhaps road testing them on the rear position only of an existing coach might be an effort worth undertaking.

Thanks, Hal... pretty clear now. Question: how will the drive axles pass by/through the frame?

It occurs to me that the electric drive folks might need this sort of system once batteries shrink by a few orders of magnitude.

As I'm building a new frame a loop will be required for axle/half shaft clearance. Driving the rear wheels should let me hide any in floor intrusion
of the differential or half shafts (if necessary, it'll be close) under the bed. The stretch makes room for the rear wheel drive with about a foot
extension behind the axle. The taller new frame will help with ground clearance especially with the 12" added overhang.
Lots of fun, thanks for watching.

Hal,

How much higher do you reckon the floor will be?
I'm assuming you're using the stock front clip, minus the engine and transmission, so the new frame is from the front clip back, right?

I'm having visions of a lift-the-body & remove-the-front-clip GMC rejuvenation drive-through! 😉

Richard, if even with the floor the differential would hang below the chassis about 3 1/2" which would equate to about 5 1/2-6" ground clearance
depending on ride height. I can easily lower the bogey box another inch if necessary to raise that number and keep rear geometry and handling
characteristics intact. The average auto has about 6" and we usually have a toad which has less than that (Mini Cooper). And yes on the new frame. I'd
love to redo the front with more caster and maybe a rack and pinion but that would open up a whole new can of worms. I wish I'd have gotten into GMC's
earlier but it is what it is.

Your build would interest probably only 95% of motor-heads, fabricators, makers, etc, and 100% of a guy who wouldn't mind being your agent scheduling

Hal,
Nice work.
In your video, you rest the bogie box on a short piece of 2x3 tubing, making it appear as though you are spacing the box outwards from the framerail. I assume this is not the case and that the short 2x3 tube will fit behind the large plate when all is assembled.

I am following this closely. You are creating what I’ve wanted to do for years. Lack of available time, and a CFO with different views has been my limiting factor.

I used the 2x3 tube just as a temp. spacer to show the relationship to the frame. The bogey box will be 2" below the normal location on the frame
though. It helps give the differential some needed extra ground clearance ( a smidgen over 8") as well as the engine/trans. And yes, the plate will be
in front of the 2" drop.
I'm blessed to have a CFO that's very understanding with all my unorthodox building. Things have usually come to fruition in the past and I pray this
one will also.

Hal,

Your new frame is going to have deeper frame rail channels, right? You know how when the coach is at the proper ride height the belt line isn't
level, it's down at the back? I'm trying to picture if the change in frame rails will provide an opportunity to 'level' the body.

I've been tied up with prepping to leave Phoenix, so I'm behind in things. Was I supposed to set up a GoFundHalGMCFab account...? There are a whole
slew of things I'm putting on the list for you to fix! :)

Richard, the frame won't change the ride attitude but adding the 2" under the bogey box will. It should make it close to level I'd guess. Now that

Having a taller frame rail was an idea I’ve tossed about since I’ve owned a TZE. If I ever have some new rails manufactured, I intend to make them 2“ taller. This allows a bunch of potential. Originally I wanted the extra 2“ of engine to hatch clearance, but the taller rails also permit deeper custom fuel and holding tanks, more room for under tank insulation, and slightly larger tire diameters. What I know I won’t like is the higher body stance. I like the low stance of the stock coaches.

Hal’s RWD mods make me want to try building a custom 23’ coach with all 4 rear wheels driven. It would be a decent camper for mild offroad use. Not too long, not too heavy, soft ride, and decent traction.

Less, I raised the body 2.5" on my first build (6.5 Diesel with 4l80e trans) and added the ground effects fiberglass all around that hides the frame.
It worked fine and I was able to build a 75 gallon single fuel tank with the added height provided. It also let the engine hatch remain virtually
intact. This build should let me use the engine/trans compartment to great advantage for a generator (5kw 2 cylinder Kabota) as well as a fuel tank,
and batteries. There should be room for holding tanks where the gas tanks once resided with an added 1" height and an extra foot of length in front of
the wheels. I shouldn't need to add the ground effects, maybe only adding wheel well flares to hide the height increase. Still a lot in limbo at this
juncture.

These guys make a rooftop heat pump. The smallest is 6-8KW or about 21K BTUs using 47 amps @ 12V. It would be great is they made one using mini-split
technology.

It's a 2007 Duramax and 6 speed Allison, set at 400 hp and 800 lbft of tq. Its a LBZ, probably the best of the D Maxes for swaps. It came out of a

Hi Hal -

I’ve previously said that your Eagle Bus is the most beautiful and functional custom fabrication work that I’ve ever witnessed - and I’ve
witnessed plenty.

But now - you’ve introduced some fear, uncertainty, and doubt into that statement.

Amazing work - on all levels. Truly amazing.

I used a 1997 one ton frame and built a jig with the locating points for the control arms, shock mounts and snubbers. The idea is to keep the geometry
exactly as the one ton truck was and use the stock components. The GM trucks came with either a stamped steel or forged lower control arm. The forged
ones I'm using are real monsters with T Bar sockets that should never fail. I will probably need to ream the knuckle to accept the tie rod ends as
they need to connect higher than previously but other than that everything is OEM, unmodified. The T bars are 1.75" vs the 1.5" GMC and slightly
shorter (about 4.25"). GM offered a lot of options in spring rates, maybe 17? so finding one that works shouldn't be too difficult. The bars I will
start with were used on a single cab truck.
One thing that threw me off was the stock angle of the lower control arms on the GMC. I tried to mimic it with the other mounting locations but had a
little bit of 'stinkin thinkin' on that one and it cost me a weeks work in the redo. The caster was way off with that setup. The truck mounts the
lower control arms parallel with the ground as I have now done.
Like I said before, there are a lot of balls in the air on this build.

Hal,
You have unique skills and resources, working on a unique motorhome, chasing a build that most of us could only dream of.
My guess is that GMC owners as a group have 1/5th of your skills and 2/3rds of your passion to enjoy and improve their coaches.
Successfully diagnosing and solving problems is one of the joys of our coaches and also one of necessity.
Therefore, watching someone as creative, resourceful and accomplished as you solve such unusual problems in what will eventually look something like
what I drive is equal parts amazing, instructive and jealousy inducing.
Don't you dare stop doing the videos, and tell your lovely wife her documenting is perfect.
You are preaching to a choir that appreciates what you are doing very much.

Hey, Hal and your own personal Video Grapher.
Things are still smokin' here in Oregon, but the fires are mostly
contained. A good thing. The towns up in the Canyon don't exist anymore,
totally destroyed. That includes Detroit, and the two marinas at the lake,
most of the town of Gates, much of Lyons, some of Mehama. All of Jawbone
Flats, and much of the old growth forests surrounding it succumbed to the
fires as well. Nearly all the State Parks, and County Parks in the area of
Little North Fork of the Santiam River, and the canyon from Detroit dam to
Mehama on the Santiam River are heavily impacted. The main road from the
Willamete Valley to Sisters and Central Oregon is still closed and is
likely to remain that way for some time, due to downed trees, power lines,
destroyed guard rails, road signs, etc. That does not even talk about
Medford, Phoenix, Talent, etc. Different fires, same results.
But, please continue to videotape your work on your current pusher
project. Many of us are really interested in your efforts. Inspiration to
all of us "gearheads" in GMC Land.
Still smokin'!!

Hal is hiding his technical/fab expertise under a bushel here. For those who haven't had the privilege of visiting the StClair demesne and touring
the Olds wagon, and the Eagle with the raised roof and the front drive Diesel GMC and the split window 'Vette undergoing a frame - off may not realize
this build is merely a step up from the past. I might add EVERYthing there looks like it came from the factory, if the factory had about three times
the normal QC stress. I'm holding off for the clean sheet motor home - I'm sure it's in mind for the future!

It started out as a Prevost (i think) it has been gutted, widened,

Wow, Hal...
I stand corrected on the bus, it deserves all the superlatives its collected.
What stops me in my tracks is that not only are you really smart about your improvements, you have the skills (and the discernment with vendors) to
actually realize them. Oh, and you actually bring your projects to completion, unlike most of us. (Sez the guy with his new air pump still mounted
with zip ties.) Sigh.
The guys at Prevost and other high-end builders should be following you around taking notes.

One example; Va and I travel and discover by sharing with each other moment by moment. I would never consider a high-end coach (even if I could afford
it) where the passenger seat is aft of the drivers seat to accommodate the original entry door. That would put my best-friend/lover/bride out of my
immediate space. Your solution to move the steering to enable side-by-side seating is a brilliant solution, thus solving a problem no one else even
mentions. Yet, side-by-side seating is central to my/our travel experience. Well done sir.

Don't stop the videos or I will hunt you down.

Funny you should mention moving the steering wheel, in my original design I had the front floor moving over 8.5". I couldn't figure a great way to
conceal and seal the gap and I was concerned with the integrity of the seat on a movable platform. After changing the column location, we had the
seats narrowed 2" and both promised ourselves we wouldn't bulk up enough not fit comfortably. It's worked.
There were quite a few details that were left off the video, too much 'gear head' stuff I guess .
Thank everyone for their nice comments, I'm embarrassed.

Hal,
Ever think about live-streaming your build?

Hal's Socially Distanced Online Work Rally anyone?

I thought I was jesting, but now I'm not so sure. 🤔

In the early days of such things (around 2000-2004) I did live stream a complete restoration of a car. It was video only with no sound. It was always amazing to me when I would be doing some mundane task like chasing threads or rewrapping wiring harnesses and I’d notice there were like 50 people watching me. One person’s boring task is another person’s entertainment, so with how easy it is today to live stream, why not give it a shot?

And let everyone see all my mistakes?
I did get the differential all together today but the axles are 12 weeks out-ouch. With the holidays fast approaching I'm afraid things are going slow
a bit. Always spend time with the family and the closest ones are in Las Vegas, 600 miles from here. After Christmas there's Quartzsite so like I
said, things will have to slow down I'm afraid

Hal,
Not to worry. Have a good holiday(s). Even though we've never met and likely never will, your sharing your journey with the GMC makes us friends. We
are more than acquaintinses because I am familiar with what you're doing more than the average civilian, and I appreciate your engineering and
attention to detail. The legion of us following your work are patient and celebrate your health and willingness to share your progress.

Thank you Douglas, I certainly appreciate your post. It seems the whole GMC comunity are really friends even if we haven't officially met.
This project is quite an under taking and keeping motivated can sometimes be a challange. Life can sometimes have its way in affairs. Receiving
feedback and knowing others are following along really helps. I understand there is a wide range of skill sets here, some more into the actual 'nut
and bolts' than others but I really appreciate it when the real gear heads join in.
Thank you again and I hope that one day we'll meet in person.

Hal, you bring up an interesting point. A few questions:

Have you ever had a project worth doing where you haven't made mistakes?
Do you learn more from the mistakes or from something that works the first time?
Is it possible to have projects or phases of a project work the first time without having a whole lot of learning experiences before that?

Mistakes are what makes us who we are. They are are what experience is built on.

I guess what I'm saying, Hal, is what with your capabilities and experience you must've made a _lot_ of mistakes along the way. Probably more than
most because you're such an ambitious guy.

I'm not trying to convince you to really live stream your build, but if you did I'll be stocking up on my supply of Orville Redenbacher. 😉

Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

Richard

For a couple of Brits that have the same gene as Hal... check out these guys:

Particularly the 'Escargot' videos for their take on the motorhome genre.

And for some perspective on those long rebuilds as applied to Toads.. "Project Binky".
