Hi all!
What are the thoughts on tankless hot water heaters? Do the Jims sell them?
what models are recommended for a GMC? I like to have hot water through the
entire shower, and they are portable in size, so I thought why not.

Has anyone here used them and what are the thoughts on them?

Sammy
GMCless for now. :)

bdub attached the link to my tankless water heater installation. This is by far one of the best upgrades we've made to our coach.

Sammy,
also in my opinion it was one of the best upgrades I've done.
I went with the Girard brand about 4 years ago. Unlimited hot water is definitely the way to go! But I think everyone is making them nowadays.
I also changed out the shower hand held faucet to a house model and took out all the water restrictures. The hand held faucet also has multiple
settings so if I'm stopped at a overnight without hookups I can still shower in the morning on the low flow setting.

Enjoy! Scott

I followed Ray's example almost to the T, although I removed the existing Propane RV refrigerator that did not work, and basically remodeled that
cabinet so I could put in a couple shelves and a small "dorm room" refrigerator. I rarely if ever Boondock, so it made sense for me.

Here are some photos what I did.

So far it has worked great. Takes a little getting used to on flow, etc., but much better than having a tank.

On the other hand, SHE's not likely to use ALL the tank water if the hot
water goes way before then. :-)

I used a Girard products tankless heater.
A lot pricier but works a lot better imho, no worries about flow or anything it acts just like a normal water heater.

That is a lot like my thinking about wanting a noisy water pump. But having had a young life with only the potable water we had in the tank did leave
an impression.

I posted this elsewhere. Re-posted it on this thread in case it was missed on the other thread.

Ray,

I used your setup as a guide when I decided to install a tankless water heater about 7 years ago. I had to modify your approach since you, as I
recall, don't have a standard GMC layout.

I wanted to keep the original (actually had upgraded it to stainless steel a few years earlier) water heater with electric and the engine coolant
loop. I wanted to be able to use the OEM when plugged in and the tankless when dry camping.

I plumbed it so that I could isolate the tankless heater from the plumbing when in potentially freezing weather (i.e. winterize it separate) on the
way to or on the way back from warmer weather. We seldom dry camp in freezing weather.

The tankless water heater is installed behind my 3-way gas reefer.

I am very happy with having a tankless water heater.

I did a presentation at the Goshen 2011 GMCMI rally about my install and have included a link here to that presentation. It is a long presentation (70
slides) and I go into detail about what I did.

http://www.palmbeachgmc.com/PDF/tankless-heater.pdf

The only downside to my current setup is that the water temperature can fluctuate during "navy showers". Happens when the water is shut off to soap
up, and then turned back on to rinse. At that time you can get hit with a shot of cold water which is annoying if you don't know its coming. I plan on
adding a mixing valve to modulate the temperature if I ever get around to it.

Hi guys,
I was looking for some DIY info on installing one of these instantaneous water heaters from Applied. Im assuming they go in the same location as the
stock water heater.

Thanx a bunch......... :d

either in the same location as the old water heater, or (some have)
installed it behind the fridge. :)

Follow the destructions exactly. :)

I installed a tankless waterheater behind the fridge almost exactly as Ray had done. I have to admit, I am not as happy as Ray with my
installation, but that might be of my own doing. I think I have a ridgeland 8L 2 GPM tankless heater. My issue I think might be because that unit
is too large. Everyone else tends to install a 6L, that is 1.6 GPM

I do not like that it takes too much flow to get it fired off and to get hot water going. I can't just do a small trickle, I have to open up the
sink a bit. When taking showers, shutting on and off of the heater has I shut on and off the water I get a burst of freezing water between turning
on and off as the heater turns on and off.

I intend to probably try a smaller tankless, and/or go back to a water heater tank. for now I have lived with it for two summers.

The tankless makes sense to me if one does little or no dry camping. Given a pretty much unlimited water supply and a dump, the long hot shower
becomes a possibility. Had I kept the 23' - rear tub - I would have installed one. Soaking in the tub after standing on concrete in a show ring all
day is one of life's simple pleasures. I could and did do so with the tank heater, but it had to be set to fairly hot water to make a tub full of
bearable water.

Hot water tankless heaters are instant start and dont care if they are fed
from a tank or a hose. Perfect even for dry campers. :)

We only use our tankless water heater when dry camping. Otherwise we use the OEM electric/engine preheat water heater since we have both.

We always take navy showers, regardless of the source of hot water because of limited black water storage. We rarely if ever camp in places with sewer
hookups.

Adding a tankless water heater is still one of the best comfort upgrades for us.

We have one at home as well. There we can take unlimited length showers if we want.

Sounds like a "modernization" but I've never run out if hot water with the stock coolant loop/electric heater and two people. Given all the problems
and expense I'm having with my Hi tech Carrier Infinity system at home I have to say a big NO THANKS. K.I.S.S.

Hi Jim, We have a 1977 Royale I believe was outfitted by coachman. Im pretty sure the existing water heater is beneath the oven. Its tough to see
since the duct work passes in front. Our model is also a rear bath.

Thanx
