For the past three days, we have been unable to access gmail on our
cell phones,. Can't even get to the sign in page. This message
appears: "HTTP Error: 404 not found" Help. Have tried customer
service for our phone carrier, but they say it is gmail fault. We
need this feature and we're paying for it!!!! But not getting it!

Cindy,

In case you didn't realize it, this is a user's group, so we can't fix anything for you, only offer suggestions/help and confirm if the problem is bigger than just you.

As a network engineer, I can tell you that the problem you're seeing is most likely your phone's carrier, or your phone.  You need to try clearing cache/cookies on your phone if they're stored locally, or have the carrier clear theirs.  The problem is not with GMail, as I can access it on a computer, from my phone's app, as well as the browser on the phone.  I'm using a Blackberry on Sprint.  Your carrier probably pushes you through a proxy, so they'd need to check their proxy for the problem as well.

I'd just call them and tell them you need to clear the cache and cookies on your phone, and they should be able to talk you through that.  Then try loading the page, hopefully you'll have different results.

Hi Cindy

The HTTP 404 error is a response from a web server telling you that the object (page, file etc.) that you requested is not found. What URL are you using in your phone's web browser?
Try punch it in manually, ie. https://mail.google.com
Have you considered setting up your phone's mail client to access Gmail with IMAP, instead of through the web browser?

Regards

Have tried emptying the cache, history, cookies, etc and still get the message. Still the same "HTTP error:  404 not found"
Don't know how to set up using IMAP - can you help?

Hi Cindy

A 404 error, like I said, is a page or document not found. Did you check the address (URL) you are entering into your phone's browser? ie. are you typing in simply www.gmail.com? Emptying the cache, deleting cookies and history will not help.

Here is the IMAP getting started guide

You will have to consult your phone's user manual on how to configure the mail application on it.

The frustrating thing is that there was no problem until one day we weren't able to access the web.  My hubby and I have identical phones and both are unable to reach the web.  We are not doing anything differently than we ever were - just one day it wouldn't work!!!  Don't know where to start...the phone company says "it's not us." and google says "it's not us."  Why was it found from the day we bought the phones?  We didn't do one thing differently one day from the next!!  Very frustrated...don't know where to turn...

Dear Cindy,
I have had exactly the identical problem happened to my MetroPCS "non
smart" phone. If you too have a MetroPCS, it could be something that
MetroPCS changed. I dunno, just fishing to find out the source. If I
find a solution, I will post back here.

If you are unable to browse the web at all on your device then this is clearly not a Gmail problem, and this is not the appropriate forum. If you are only receiving a 404 server response when trying to get Gmail then there is a problem with the URL in your browser.

Thank you, Paul.  I wonder if it has something to do with the phone carrier.  Our phones are Wal-Mart Straight Talk phones.  The kicker is this...we have had NO PROBLEM at all with reading e-mail for over a year and it just started when I began these posts.  We are supposed to be getting 30 MB of web serfing with our monthly minutes and now we can't use this feature.  Bummer!!!!  I'll listen to whatever surfaces from this quest!!!  Thank you.

Click what link exactly?

Just point your browser at mail.google.com
