The good folks at Google didn't see fit to give Gmail a button to
insert a line or horizontal rule, my favorite message separator. It
does however display lines in messages inserted by other non-Gmail
senders.

I've tried doing this with an HTML <hr> but this does not work.

Oddly enough, a line can be copied and pasted within a Gmail message.
So this code is kept in the Windows clipboard, and it can be
successfully pasted into MS Word (which displays a line). But when I
paste this code into Notepad it does not display. This must be a
shortcoming of Notepad. If I had a better text editor like UltraEdit
it might show the characters.

Does anyone know the characters to make a horizontal rule?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Bruce

The Gmail editor does not allow one to enter HTML directly. As you've
noticed, you can however paste the already rendered HTML (eg. the HR).
Notepad only does plain text, that is why you couldn't paste it there.

You have two choices here. 1) Create the message in a WYSIWYG editor
and then drag/copy 'n paste into Gmail. 2) GmailSkins Firefox plugin
http://gmailskins.mozdev.org/ (hopefully you are using FF).

Cheers

Hi Bruce;

Interesting issue. I don't have such an e-mail handy.  Send me an e-mail that includes such a line directly to my address in the signature and I'll see what I can disassemble. I'm running under Linux and possibly my tools will find something.

It won't help disassembling, point is you can only paste in already rendered HTML. He has to use an editor that renders the HTML (ie. WYSIWYG) such as Google Page Creator. I have pasted a <hr> for you below:

I solved this issue by putting an horizontal line in a canned response.
(Not sure if this was already possible back in 2009. )
