I've been using Gmail for about a year or so now, but have only in the
past few months been using it as my primary email. So I've been
re-registering lots of new websites I shop at/visit/read forums
on...and I haven't checked all of the email they've sent me. I know one
can usually turn off the email at the site itself, but lets say a few
sites won't let me. Or it seems like it would take too much time. So it
builds up and you have lots of unread mail.

That's where I think this feature would be nifty. You could turn it on
in options somewhere, and then all of the email on that page, or the
first five, first two, whatever the user chooses, will be auto-unread.
This would be extremely nifty for me. Even more handy would be if it
faded out slightly to give me a mental cue that this mail would be
marked as unread.

It would be extremely helpful to people receiving lots of emails, often
confirmations from online groups or shops... And I don't think it would
be too hard to add it to the gmail options somewhere. Of course I'm no
programmer.

...But even a little letter icon (like: click to instantly mark unread)
beside each email would suffice for me. Although it might not for other
people. Which is why I don't think these sorts of things should be
default, but for someone who wants to change the layout a bit...why not
make an easy way to do it?

Just a few friendly suggestions, it's late and I'm not even sure if
this is the appropriate newsgroup, but I'm hoping that an employee of
Google's might stumble upon this.

Oh, and I also think that the compose mail button on the left of the
page should be much easier to spot, to make it stand out from the other
selections. I think most new users would find it extremely helpful.

You have that function on the pull down menu.

Yeah, that works about like I want it to. Gmail is so far ahead of all
the other email services, it's insane. It's so easy to use. Oh, and
when I said marked unread, I meant marked read. I do that a lot for
some reason...

There is also a greasemonkey script @ userscripts.com that will put a
button on the row with (Archive) (Report Spam) (Delete) to mark as
unread/read. [it is a "smart" button. if the selected message is read,
it will say (Mark Unread) and vice versa.]
