Granny Maureen - try the old standby of clearin' the cache completely!
Should resolve your problem.

Their Sevice status - http://www.google.com/appsstatus#hl=en says there is disruption to Gmail; but it's working OK for me in the UK.
You can find the link for sevice status on the Gmail Help Page at the left.

What help says about 404 errors is here - http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=66153
I'm not sure how helpful that actuallly is.

You could also try logging in to:
https:// mail.google.com/mail, the secure HTTPS site

Good luck,
Sarah

I think that status page is for Google apps, not Gmail?

Generally if there is a Gmail outage its on the news :)

Andrew,
No it does apply to gmail, they just provide all sevice info in one place.
It says, at the top of the page "
Unless otherwise noted, this status information applies to consumer services as well as services for organizations using Google Apps."

Apparently they have now (7.35PM UTC +1) resolved the problem, which they say affected approx 3% of Gmail customers.
On that status page, If you click the little blue i, where it says information available, a description of the problem, and Google's activities to resolve it are available.

Kudos for Sarah Hill!

What a pleasure to be connected to such a knowledgeable and generous
mentor. Sarah doesn't only attempt to answer questions, she goes one
step further by listing helpful reference sites.

Heartfelt thanks Sarah

cleared cache and all the basic stuff before I came here..I guess what
it took though [after trying another browser or two just in case
chrome was having problems] was waiting. I never read anything about
any problems, and so I must think it was my pc and we know how they
can get odd at times[I swear they are really alive and just get
enjoyment confusing users] but after about two hours, I was able to go
in and read my email, without any error messages at all. I will say
though, I have been using gmail for well, since it started out in
beta, and never had this happen before, so I am blaming the new pc,
its a few months old now, and most likely reached its rebellious
'teen' period of existence. I am new to chrome, having only used it
now for about 6 months, and it seems okay for the most part, but the
issue is resolved and I do thank those who attempted to assist me, you
are all great!! thanks once more. granny
