Lycos 300 MB

Lycos (UK) have now joined in with the 'email wars' and have given 300
MB free to users.

Not sure if Lycos (US) is doing this. Still, can any email provider
level up with Gmail? I don't think this is possible but then again
Gmail is new and only has a few users. MSN Hotmail and Yahoo etc have
already got millions of users unlike Gmail.

There have been a few that have offered 1G for free (like the one in
Israel - Walla.com), but none of the big guys as far as I know. Lots
of services have offered 2 gigs or more for a small yearly fee,
though.

Realistically, very few people are going to use up 1 GB of email space
. . . or even 300 MB of free space.

From a business perspective, web-based email providers need to make
sure that somewhere on their page it says something like "You've used
1.5% of your 300 MB quota", instead of what it used to say: "You've
used 90% of your 5 MB quota."

Especially, if you've been using an address for years, switching
emails can be a pain. Their goal is probably to keep from hemorrhaging
users to Gmail, and they're likely betting that upping the quota will
keep people from migrating.

It's not like Google has a 1 GB partition of a hard drive reserved
exclusively for each user. They're just dumping this all into some
gargantuan database systems, and they just add storage space as they
need it. Google's genius is realizing that 1GB will almost never mean
1GB for most users. It might mean a couple hundred megs. Or by the
time the average user accumulates 1 GB of email (say a year or two
down the road), the cost-per-GB of storage will have dropped so
dramatically that they can say "Hell with 1 GB, we're giving you 5 GB
now!" and not be spending any more money.

There is the Indian provider called rediffmail that also provides 1GB
of mail. Ive got accounts on rediffmail and here so im not complaining
:D

spymac mail was probably the first webmail provider that i know of
that offered 1gb

Spymac is blocking all Yahoogroups mail, which makes it a non-starter
for lots of folks. :(

I had a friend try that, and the web page (www.walla.com) was
installing ad-ware and key-loggers all over his system. Beware what
you try.

On the other note. I also have a Spymac account. It's interface is
more "traditional" e-mail, and I have noticed delays in sending and
receiving messages from it, but I just have it as a "hobby" account. I
prefer Gmail not because of the high storage limit, but because of the
paradigm shift in how to handle e-mail. Now if we just had POP3
retrieval (another 2 dozen threads) it'd be perfect <bweg>
