Selecting folder for .git

I'm using gitextensions on Windows. The git folder is always created in the same folder as my code. Is there a way to save the git folder to different location/drive? I could not find anything in the help or on this site. Seems like a bad idea to save all changes in git in the same folder as the source code. Thanks

GitExtensions doesn't have this option
