Hershey fonts in ggplot2

I've created a dataframe of labels with a column for each of:

• label text,
• font family, and
• font face.

The reason I need to specify it at this level is because I'm combining text from the "sans" family with some of the symbols from the Hershey fonts (arrows etc.) However, I don't know how to specify the "raw" Hershey fonts; using "HersheySymbol" for the family works for the symbol escape sequences (e.g. \\ua, \\da) but not for the raw codes (e.g. \\#2296, \\#2299).
