Graphics for Beamer

Is it possible in R using ggplot2 or the other graphics systems to generate figures that have no background.  With such figures one can use the themes in beamer to provide consistency across a presentation.

I wonder if you could do it using ggvis too, but there is a lot less information out there about this.

Yes, you can create graphics with transparent backgrounds.
If I recall correctly, the issue is not base graphics v grid (lattice or ggplot2), but rather the capability of the output format/device you use.  Most have a bg='transparent'; see grDevices or ?png.
