CAN GEOTRELLIS DO THE SAMETHINGS?

hi geotrellis masters,

Now ,i'm doing some research on how to extract "island or something else" from the TIF file,just like this link:

http://4quant.com/geospatialdemo/ ,can you give me some advice or guidance?Does geotrellis do the same thing?
