Hello Geneva web group,

I have recently hired a designer who is pushing me to go to Adobe Muse for our website. She thinks that it is a better option -- mostly because she is more familiar with Muse. We have a large database in Drupal that would have to live inside of Muse as an iframe. Is this a crazy idea? Maybe there is a consultant on this list that I could commission for advice to look at our system?

Thank you!
Virginia

Hi Virginia,

We had our graphic designer use (for the first time) Muse for one of our web projects. The idea was to integrate her design and visual components into our web platform, but we soon realised that you can’t just export elements (i.e. images, HTML, CSS, scripts, etc.) just like that, mainly because Adobe wants you to use their web platform to host your site, or stick to Adobe products for your web presence.
From what we know, Muse is not really the best option for a web designer -> web developer collaboration. It’s perfect for a graphic designer who wants to build a website without touching any code.

Hope this helps.

Hi Virginia,

I confirm what Alex said: Muse is really , really, not done for any kind of collaborative work.
That's fine for a single developper/designer.
When time comes for different people to act on the website... that's simply not possible.

However, you can export the site as a static website on any hosting platform, but you just can't do tiny edits in generated files (html, css...) without having to go back in Muse project and regenerate the full website from there.

Actually I did the reverse thing: I ineheritated a Muse website, that I converted to a Wordpress one.
Just to at least allow several people to edit the site...

Best

Christophe

Hi Virginia,

Muse is a webdesign & graphic design solution for pure visual design. It is not meant for proper integration with Dynamic code, and even less with CMS specific code. Muse is a "wix" like solution to put it simply. Drag and drop, write your text. Great for a small business with little upgrade needs, or for solutions for portfolios and artists.

If you need to integrate drupal, it could totally be the Design/webdesign part as a mockup work, but it should finish in Dreamweaver CC if she's on that software, in order to plug the Drupal code or elements.

as Alex stated, it is very much to keep people in the Adobe world, but even more because the target of adobe are Creatives and they will enable simple design, with background code written for them. It works well for sure, however if we consider the size of your organisation and the type of site you are running, you are more into a UX solution with a designer, developer, content editor and HCI specialist to get it all to work together.

Some feedback on the muse / drupal integration here, some managed by updating the CSS and the Drupal Markup making a theme out of the Muse Layout :
https://www.quora.com/Is-it-possible-to-export-HTML-CSS-from-Adobe-Muse-and-use-for-other-CMS-platforms-like-Wordpress-Drupal-Joomla

For a smaller solution you can use Publiz.com which is the CMS for Muse integration : https://www.publiz.com/muse.html

Hope this helps,

Olivier Borgognon

I would avoid vendor lock-in at all cost. Not only do you end up getting stuck with one particular technology, supported by one particular company, but the moment they decide to ditch it, you are in trouble. Not to mention the cost.

Also, avoid iFrames unless you want to build a retro website.

Hello Virginia,

In my view it really depends whether you need to integrate your site within a CMS or not.
If your site will be managed entirely by your Muse teammate from all perspective, design and content, it could be fine using Muse.
If that is a larger site, if you wish to benefit of rich content editing capabilities, if you have multiple editors, whatever condition would make it smarter using a CMS, that is another story.

The fact that you already have some Drupal content to expose on your web site does not really change the situation, except for the fact that it gives an extra incentive to consolidate your technology around Drupal for back-end.
I will be happy to discuss this more in depth with you if you like, don't hesitate to contact me at antoine....@inovae.ch

Antoine.
