Hi Craig,
I think that projects like The Grid are interesting technically but a
website like anything else cannot just be defined by metrics, rules of
assumed "perfection" or "clean" design.
The trends, technological and cultural evolutions are defining and
influencing our point of views and the "window" through which we are
looking at usability, information and data. I don't think everything can
be automatized, even by a very good AI algorithm, it will still embed the
limitation of its creators and the boundaries belonging to the creation
time.
However the approach of the concept is good in the sense that they are
trying to remove the wasted time spent on reinventing the wheel to have
the basic modern and current website features that can be found on the
fancy high end websites around, especially when you don't need or want to
have a specific complex design that is adapted to your needs or wishes.
Which is of course the case for a lot of projects. It's focused on people
with a very little IT knowledge and high budget constraints.
The main issue using a system that is rendering your website automatically
is that you will loose a lot of control on the code, the performance, the
security, the specific evolutions that you would want to add. You rely on
a third party system in long term and switch to something else could be
costly, long and messy.
The AI and automation are attractive for many reasons such as technology
fanciness, having a quickly running project and reduce costs. But it is
only reliable for small projects like a light corporate website, not for a
complex platform or web application, especially managing sensitive data.
