Hi Gamechangers,
I’m Melissa – I don’t post on here often, but I wanted to tell you all about a
new project I’ve just launched with my partner, Andrew Grant Thomas. It’s
called EmbraceRace. In a nutshell, it’s
an effort to build community (both on and offline) around caregivers (parents,
guardians, teachers, mentors) raising children in a race-conscious way. So far,
we’ve built a presence on Medium,
Facebook, and through
our newsletter.
The community is organized to pursue three goals:
· Educating and informing adults about the pervasive impact of race in kids’ lives.
· Helping caregivers nurture resilient kids of color and racial literacy in all kids.
· Helping caring adults become effective racial equity advocates for kids.
We
are starting this community of support because we need it, too! I am biracial
and Andrew is black. We think about race a lot and even have related expertise.
But as parents, we still struggle. We’re excited about co-creating the
community we all need within and alongside a multiracial community of concerned
adults. Join us!
How
you can help us:
1.
Follow us on social media, and let
your networks know about us. The EmbraceRace Facebook
page is a good place to start.
2.
Sign up for our newsletter.
3. Email us, and introduce yourself! Send
to hu...@embracerace.org. We’re always
interested in featuring new voices on our blog, and hopefully at some point on
our podcast.
Thanks
for taking a few minutes to read this email. There are probably a lot of
parents on this listserv, and I bet all of you are grappling with the same
issues that prompted Andrew and I to begin this undertaking. Our biggest goal
is to make it easier for people to connect around this issues, and have these
conversations in intentional, intelligent, compassionate ways.
Melissa
