Hello fellow hackers!

We have been kicking the idea around for a while about offering a "dual"
membership for Hackerspace members. After a visit from Brian over at
our space, we have decided to offer a limited deal of a membership in
our space for $20 per month for up to 20 hackerspace visitors. Normally
our membership is $99 per month and $49 for students, so this is a huge
discount. We have some heavier equpment, some specialty stuff, and some
other cool toys to compliment the Hackerspace. What we like about the
idea is just having you all coming by. Interaction is great, and leads
to lots of exciting new ideas. We are looking to get even more diverse
folks coming around to play, help with projects, or just hang out and
throw ideas around. Initially, we would be limiting access to normal
hours (9-6) although we can be there pretty much any evening with a few
hours notice. As we become more familiar with the skills of members on
certain tools, we would begin to identify superusers and allow
individual, after hours access (subject to safety considerations). The
$20 would cover access to the shop and tools, including some, but not
all of the higher tech stuff like microscopes, etc. We also keep a few
supplies around, and those consumables can be purchased.

We have had a few general member users over our last year, but have not
had a large group of members. If this sounds like something that you
all want to do, then we can certainly keep evaluating and make its
structure and mechanism something of a continuous improvement project.
If it all works well and once we make sure we can manage it, then we can
think about expanding the number of available slots in a few months.

Just to reassure those long-term Hackerspace fans--We are not trying to
move members over from the Hackerspace. I have been lurking there for
years and love it! I think our spaces are highly complimentary. The
Tech Toybox is very focused on prototype generation for business and
focussed projects (art, personal interest, etc.), but our tools
certainly have great utility for those of us who just like to tinker. I
find myself just playing often over the weekends!

Just as a bonus for the future, we will be moving many of our tools to a
location within walking distance of the Hackerspace in a few months! It
will be a very cool space and even more large shiny toys! Stay tuned
for details...

I would be happy to stop by one Tuesday to answer questions and make it
happen. If there is a resounding agreement from the e-mail list, then we
can open it up right away to begin signing up! In that case we would
just take the first 20 and I can send instructions to sign up.

Thanks all!
Mark

I'm certainly interested - mostly to get a spot at learning to use your SEM.  But you know,  on reflection, I wouldn't be using it enough to justify keeping someone else out of your space.

I might instead suggest a more democratic version - hackerspace could 'reserve' a monthly bloc of Tech-Toybox slots,  and it would be a monthly first-come, first serve.   I'd increase my dues another $20 happily to cover it (I suspect we'd actually create a 'maniacal' membership class that would be less than that, to cover everyone else (sort of like health insurance - *ducks*)).

If people have to wait too long to get a slot, well, we renegotiate the size of the bloc.

Mark, Fascinating proposal!  Thank you for the offer!

Could you further elaborate in regards to: classes/workshops, equipment, guests, laser cutter, days of availability?

Randy, I think you should go ahead and pounce on the membership.  I like your health insurance ducks idea.

Brian, hah, silly video, that's what it feels like!

I'm excited to see further developments.

Mark, I'm really excited to see this cross-pollination happen. This
will be a hugely cool thing for both our groups.

I'm definitely in for a seat. Thanks very much!

Count me in too. Last time I was there I was impressed with the space, and I would love to have access to your big boy toys.
