Hey Guys,

My name is Paul Rosenberger and I'm a recent HackerHouse grad. If you've seen my demos last year I created the Glacious Ice Sphere Press. I'm currently the Hackerhouse manager and I'd like to get some experience using a lathe. I've heard whispers of a lathe at the hackerspace workshop. If anyone is going to be out at the shop tonight I would really love to see it. My new Glacious design is 3.5" diameter cylindrical billet. If anybody knows the maximum work piece diameter of that lathe it would save us a trip out there. I'm planning on renewing my membership and would like to make the most out of it. Any info regarding that lathe would be appreciated.

Cheers!

It's a 7x10, manual.

Brian Bartholomew will be the most detailed source of information on it.

Is it the one from Harbor Freight?

I suspect for a nice finish on a spherical pocket in 3.5" diameter aluminum,
the 7x10 will not do what you want. I have found that the capabilities of
mills and lathes are better described by the weight of machine rather than
by the size numbers. Here is more info on the 7x10 and other machines
in the Noisy/Dirty shop:

On the other hand, FL Tech Toybox is offering a limited number of joint
memberships for cheap, and they have a 12x36 or 12x40 that would
be perfectly suitable.

Thanks Brian,

I'll go check out Mark Davidson's set up tomorrow.
