6:30 - 7:45 Research Computing Linux Infrastructure | Jon Akers

Perhaps one of the largest users of the linux operating system is Research Computing at the University of Florida. At the heart of tens of thousands of compute nodes, the linux operating system is there helping researchers analyze data for scientific discovery and innovation. Jon Akers will give an overview of the current state of the high performance computing cluster and describe how linux is used in the infrastructure. 

Research Computing is one of seven core units within UF Information Technology. Its mission is to support research-oriented computing activity as needed by UF faculty and drive the University toward its stated goal of becoming a top-ten public research university.

Research Computing staff operate and support large-scale computing systems and data storage facilities for the benefit of the UF research community.

Jon Akers is a Senior Systems Administrator for Research Computing at the University of Florida. He has been with Research Computing for the past decade. His recent activities include the installation and configuration of HiPerGator 2.0, a supercomputer at UF that scored number 114 on the Top 500 list of supercomputers in the Fall of 2015. His interests include working with obscure computer processors.
