A compatriot saw this on surplus, and thought we might be inclined.

Its cool, but where would we put it?  And how would we pass material through it in our current industrial space?

We'd have to have members take home a lot of duplicate tools, tables, and dormant "projects" to have space to actually make use of this.

Have a great day and keep pedaling,

It would be pressing us for space, but it would be a practical addition. It would allow for more "everyday" type projects. My concern though is the mix of sawdust and welding equipment in the same confined space.

That being said, if we are going to bid on it as a space, can you let me know. I know another person that has a shop in the Northeast industrial area that may be bidding on it as well and I wouldn't want there to be cross bids between friends driving up the price for either.

Great comments on dust and cross bidding.

I hope that if we are bidding on it this is through the board with some cap set and need justification.  If we do not have a policy for acquiring new tools, I think we should set up a subcommittee to establish a procedure.  Between the increasing lack of space and the fact that the toolbox Frank bought still has not been covered, I'd hate to have another misstep or unreimbursed spending.

Mitigations to the fire danger of sawdust fuel load under objects
where welding sparks bounce:

Make sawdust in a place where the sawdust goes onto bare floor, where
it's faster and easier to vacuum it up. Vacuuming up sawdust is part
of the job, budget time for it. Make welding sparks in a place where
they fall onto a bare floor. Cardboard screens control sawdust, sheet
metal screens control welding sparks. If you can't predict in advance
where the sparks will go, make them out in clear space in the parking
lot. Stick around for 45 minutes after welding, make sure all burning
smells have dissipated.

All variations on the theme of, to be safe you have to know where the
edges of your knowledge are, and respect those edges. 'Oblivious' is
never safe, and cannot be made safe by policy or architecture.

I saw it at UF before it went on auction and had been keeping a look out for it to come up, of course the auction happened while I was out of town and ended just hours before I got back. Looked like a really kick ass saw, would have been nice.

Ok, this is weird, the saw doesn't show up on the UF site and browsing the other site I can't find it. The only link I can find it on is the one that Alan sent. Turns out the auction has not yet ended I just couldn't find it on the UF site.

Who else is bidding? Are they HS people? Is there any interest in anyone chipping in for such a fine saw? Time is running out.

Frank,

If you've got a place to put it, I'd chip in a least a little on it. I'll check and see if the other person I know is going to bid on it.

Great! I've got a friend who's going to put in a bid for us.

Thanks,

Bidding went over $500.00 couldn't justify going that high.
