Put me down for a couple of rolls for general use,  if you wish.

Thank you for that heads up! I just purchased a few rolls of PLA, about time I give that a try over my usual ABS lol

Well, for the compleat 3D Noob,  what's recommended to start with?   One of each kind?  Any recommendations on colors?

PLA is easier, and white is the most forgiving.

It seems to me that this is kind of like a Ford/Chevy thing.  I have heard people complain bitterly about each and swear by each.  We print both routinely here (along with a few exotics)  and, interestingly, some people have great experience with ABS and some with PLA.  I think it is just a matter of which you develop a *feel* for and can home in on the temperatures/speeds, etc.  Personally, if I were to pick one only, I would go with PLE, but only because it prints at lower temperature and doesn't stink.

Well, I'll get both to play with then - thanks Mark, your email was helpful.

Both materials have their advantages. ABS is slightly stronger, can be smoothed and welded together with acetone, handles higher temperature but warps like crazy if cooled incorrectly, and is petroleum based. (and also, might be slightly carcinogenic, so proper ventilation is needed, etc).

PLA is corn-based, biodegradable, prints with lower temperature (and doesn't need a heated bed to print, unlike ABS which needs a heated bed). It also smells slightly sweet when printed, unlike ABS which has a very plastic smell. It can't be chemically smoothed without the use of really harsh organic chemicals.

They both have their uses. I tend to print with ABS due to the smoothing and welding, but I also started with ABS and didn't have a problem with it, so I haven't used PLA too much. I already have many rolls of ABS, so this is the perfect excuse to stock up on some PLA to play around with :D

I just got mine in, looks like quality stuff. The deal still looks like it is up and going, I think the 14hrs nonsense was something to do with shipping.

Affirmative, I just ordered a couple rolls, one PLA and and one ABS.  I've got a prime account for the moment, so the shipping wasn't an issue.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice on what to get - I appreciate it!

The price has fluctuated from original sale, I've seen it go up as high as $18.99 a roll, but they are back to $13.99 again.

don't be fooled by the $12.99 rolls, as they are 0.6kg instead of 1 kg

from what they have in stock, I've used and loved their Red PLA, Blue PLA, their white ABS is good too.

The Green PLA was strange though, I had to lower temp by 25C and almost double my printing speed to get quality prints with it....a 25C adjustment is a little crazy.

PLA is easier to print with, so stick with that unless you need a bit more heat resistance. PLA melts in the car, ABS does not.

I'd suggest checking out camelcamelcamel.com, and setting a price alert on what you want.  I picked the first spool listed for that merchant, white ABS, and got:
