NAME
Proposal for Processes and Machines in Southern Room of 6th Street

SYNOPSIS
In my opinion, the Southern room of 6th street should be shop space
centered on woodworking, and secondarily introductory metal lathe.

DESCRIPTION
All the woodworking machines set up ready to use, with room to move
around them, much better lighting, climate control, dust collection.

Tools would include: Frank's table saw, belt sander, radial arm saw (the
older Craftsman on the newer Craftsman contractor saw table). Maybe the
DeWalt radial could get a table.

Jim's floor drill press. Frank offers a replacement drill press for the
dirty shop.

Frank has a worktable in mind.

Kamin's Atlas metal lathe, the Goodell-Pratt lathe.

Brian's Shopsmith 510 with woodworking attachments, 7x10 lathe.

Wood dust collector TBD, located indoors inside sound muffled cabinet
with air compressor. Collection not shared with laser cutter, which has
its own short run.

Perhaps Frank's huge disk sander. Perhaps a jointer? Too bad the big one
went away.

I'm neutral on this proposal.
I recognize the advantage of separation of wood and metal shops.
I use the metal working tools more than wood but have no preference as to which is located at the East Shop and which is located at the West Shop.

Thanks for putting the plan together Brian! Besides the dust collection system, is there any other infrastructure we'd need to buy/build/install/make in order to have that equipment there?

This comes to mind:

Lighting! But be careful about disturbing the ceiling texture
material. Lighting should not explode when hit with thrown wooden
workpiece, so plastic protective sleeves over fluorescents.

A run of outlet boxes down both walls, with two circuits each. I'm
not sure what height above the floor. Conventional foot and a half?
Five foot, which is above standing height tabletop?

There already is a retractable air hose reel earmarked for downtown,
which was never installed.

If you have fluorescent fixtures, LED T8 bulbs are on sale, just need to removed the ballast:

What is existing are 8' T12 fixtures for the most part. LED ballast by pass bulbs are available from amazon prime for $89 in packs of 4. These are rated as 40W, 4000Lm. Roughly $22.50 each. Placement of original fixtures is probably not ideal, a couple of them pass through walls from one room to another. 40W, 4,500 Lm, 4' shop lights with power cord, chain and a built in receptacle for daisy chaining multiple lights are available from Rural King for $24.99. These could be placed where they are most useful.  I can bring one in for inspection.

Just some food for thought.

Frank,
Will most of the affected tools/spaces not have work lights or bench lights attached?

Have a great day and keep pedaling,

What is the current price premium in dollars/lumen to get LED over fluorescent?

Is there a compensating LED advantage in heat, color temperature, color rendering, lifetime,
lack of flicker visible to most people, or otherwise for fixtures at ceiling height?

I'd be delighted to go buy ALL THE LEDs in order to have the new
facility fluorescent-free. It would mean my wife could finally come
to one of our locations!

We should do some calculations to see how much we'd have to buy to make that happen. I'd be happy to pitch in as well!

Not sure of all numerical pros and cons just the general, LED is better. For now I suggest we run with what we got. Most of the T-12's in the shop area are functional so it's not a pressing issue. Once we really get in there and start getting set up we can better evaluate our lighting needs, plus we will have many of the fixtures from the old location.

One more thing to consider with the lighting is we want to disturb the ceiling as little as possible as to not dislodge the popcorn covering. Proper precautions will need to to be taken when working with the ceiling.
