I'm hunting a surface plate, or pretty-good approximation thereof, of
greater than 14" square. my birch plywood surface isn't flat enough
for the sharpening I'm gearing up to do.

Anybody got any go-to sources for this sort of stuff locally?

Float glass works pretty well,   Shea's will do a precision cut for you.

What I've already got is 14" tempered glass tile; the problem I'm
trying to solve is that, when I put it on my plywood and lean into it,
there's wiggle and warp. So I need flatter than the table, flatter
than the plywood.

The easy go-buy-it answer is a granite surface plate ca. 2-3" thick,
but that doesn't grow on trees, and shipping it is... :) so I'm
trying to think outside the box a bit.

I have a piece of granite countertop at the shop you are welcome to. It may be slightly larger.
I believe it was a drop from a sink cutout.

You should also be able to get a piece of stone that size as a remnant for pretty cheap. Try Jackson Stoneworks. Jackson does a huge amount of business as they supply Lowes with their inventory for a large part of the country. I'm also pretty sure that the equipment they use there gets one of the flattest surfaces you're going to find for cheap. They're just south of depot hear the rail to trails.

If you still have a box or two of them, use a stack.

There is a granite surface plate on the N/D shelf next to the belt sander.
I recall bringing in another one, it's still in the cardboard,
somewhere on the right end of the shelves.

Buy surface plates from use-enco.com when the have free shipping, which
they do at this moment, coupon at top of home page.

9x12" 30 pounds $43
12x18" 85 pounds $87
18x24" 180 pounds $150

You could make the flattest pastry and chocolates in town.

I will bring a piece of granite countertop to the shop space this afternoon. Check it out and see if it is useful .
