just in stalled 0.6.8.     running ubuntu 13.10.

did an apt-get install for all the recommended.   most were there, some installed,  some apt-get said cannot find.  may not be issue.
followed make install   with ???=no as I do not have gdm running.

I do a total text boot, login.   my login is to a tcsh not bash.

For the last several years I
start fvwm    xinit `which fvwm`

for reference
my halfass hacked decades old and cut and pasted fvwm2.rc file  http://toms.homeip.net/u13.10/fvwm/2014_04_19_18_19_.fvwm2rc
I am going to read and play so more, but I have some basic, likely dumb questions.
I started fvwm-nightshade  xinit `which fvwm-nightshade`

got the config app.  looks like it starts with desk to both displays.
seems like it created a 3x3 on each of my 1600x1200 screens.
I do not know where the fvwm2rc file being used is.

saw how the mouse button were working.
found terminal,
did   xrandr --output DVI1 --auto --above DVI-0
now looks like 1x3  1600x2400 that is the right start.

Now I need to figure out the rest.   I'll  read, maybe I missed where the fvwm2rc equivalent is located and or called.

And thank you,  Instructions that work.    I am amazed and pleased.
looking to find out if there is a way to identify or know if kde or gnome or .... apps work ok with fvwm.
I have found in 13.10 some gnome apps mess up mouse access to button window oops.
This was not the case in fedora fc13 that I recall.

The easiest way is to install FNS from the package directory (where the Makefile is located) with
$> make deb
The deb file will be created a level higher.

After that you can install it as root with
#> dpkg -i fvwm-nightshade-<version>.deb

If not all recommended packages installed you have to do
#> apt-get -f install

As you haven't a graphical login manager installed add the following lines to your local .xinitrc:

exec fvwm-nightshade

Then you can use startx to start the X11 session and FNS.

Hmm .. didn't start FVWM at this way yet ...

Wow, many desks! Looks awesome! More desks in FNS is one of the future goals but not enough manpower at the moment :-(

With this method I think the default FVWM config located in /etc/X11/fvwm is started but whether you called fvwm-nightshade it
starts the base config, too. Try the above method with startx.

Looks like you have seen another configuration on your screen than FNS because we use 4x1 or 2x2 desktop pages.

Another problem in FNS is the multi monitor support. There's only a basic xinerama support implemented. This will go away
perhaps in 0.8 which I am working on.

If you mean that scrolling not working - yes this is a known bug with Gtk ... not fixed yet. Have that issue on Debian testing, too.
It's very annoying :-/

I would suggest you uninstall FNS and reinstall it from fresh with the deb package and the entry in ~/.xinitrc

Ensure that ~/.fvwm-nightshade doesn't exist before reinstalling.

Normally, after starting FNS and accept the base config ~/.fvwm-nightshade will be created.

The system path of FNS is /usr/share/fvwm-nightshade. The config file is not .fvwm2rc but 'config'.

Hope these infos help ...

Best,
Thomas
