resourceAttributesAtPath being called with very high frequency

I have a filesystem with customer icons for the folders and all is working well but I'm surprised at how often resourceAttributesAtPath is being called for the same folders over and over (say ten times in a row, wait 5 seconds same thing, repeat). Is anybody else seeing this? Any wisdom to share? As I mentioned it's working but certainly isn't efficient.
