client_view url is not valid until sendByEmail is issued

I want to create an invoice and immediately redirect the user to the invoice for payment.  The client_view link seems to be the appropriate url to use, but it appears to only be valid if you "send" the email (via sendByEmail).  When trying to view an invoice that has not been sent, you get the "This invoice is no longer available" message.  Once it's sent, the link works fine.  What am I missing here?
