Notes - 2015-05-11 (Third Place Books)

We discussed the need to reboot the organization and what folks would like the future scope and activities of the group to be - basically leverage the hardware/rebuild expertise to grow into providing easy-access laptops and software skills training. Nobody was super concerned with staying FreeGeek compatible if that was a problem.

Needs
  • new workshop location
  • outreach for attendees from the community
  • outreach for workshop leads

Goals/activities
  • desktop rebuilds. This makes an attractive demo for libraries, getting us a foot in the door for awareness, become a 'known entity' for future activities like classes
  • laptops with easy internet access (browser, email). this is attractive to the 'older' crowd. Should look into Chromixium. Access to laptops is hard to come by though.
  • software training/curriculum
    • linux (intro to command line for anybody)
    • linux sysadmin (focused on helping people get into an admin position somewhere, eventually leading to job/career)
    • web apps
    • mobile apps (we could help people connect to app marketplaces)
  • become 'umbrella' organization, bringing in specialists for classes and training. If we get known to libraries/community centers, we could bring in other groups to provide focused skills training that our group may not have

Connections
  • look at connecting with FSF for guidance and help
  • connect witih G-SLUG
  • connect with other cities/groups doing free-geek style activities

Sorry Andrew, no IRC-ready system to remote you in.

There was a very loud band of many inexperienced children playing,
most of the time. Nobody could hear anyone talk most of the time,
until the band finally ended. We should plan any future Monthly
Meetings better, and check TPC calendar for any bands, and cancel if
they are playing. It is pointless to meet at a place where you can't
hear any conversation.

As you've already seen, Mike was nice enough to take notes for us.
