Yesterday's workshop was well-attended and eventful. In addition to
Lee, Jeremy, Judy, Meg and me, two new volunteers came in: Can and
Jennifer.
We tore down about 6 old computers, harvesting the useful parts
therein- we now have a decent stock of slot covers, drive bay covers,
ribbon cables and the like. We also extracted several old IDE hard
disks from these old machines (along with a lot of dust!)
Jeremy and Lee put together a machine with which to perform data
destruction [1] on many drives at one time. We left it doing a DBAN
run on 7 disks.
Jeremy also produced a map of the upstream side of the FCS' network
[2] for use in that project.
We set up one new computer and booted it from PXE. (Apparently
'Pentium 4 HT' is 32-bit, while 'Pentium 4 Dual-Core' is 64-bit. OK
then.) Tested printing from network boot- it failed silently. The job
went through the queue, the printer indicated that it was receiving
data, but it did not print the job.
Also attempted to access OEM mode in Ubiquity (the Ubuntu installer
program) via command-line parameters. It didn't work as expected: it
looks as though it needs a preseed file in order to work.
