Hey everyone – if you have some time, please let Amanda or myself know, this is a pro-active action we can do to positively change Oak Bay’s plans.

If you haven’t read my blog post on the speeding in Oak Bay, please take a look here: http://blog.thevictoriavegan.com/2014/01/oak-bay-slow-down-for-deer.html

We’re simply standing on the side of the road reminding traffic that there’s wildlife (deer) in the area, and they need to be alert, and drive respectfully.

Cadboro Bay Rd is virtually the only road in Oak Bay where deer are hit by automobiles, and this is one of the primary reasons Mayor Jensen wants to kill 25 deer.

Deer are being hit on this stretch because it’s dark, and people speed. We’ve even gone to the lengths of buying a sports ‘radar’, and people regularly exceed 60kph on this stretch (which has a limit of 50kph, and we argue should be 40kph.)

We’ve also discovered that the police almost never come down this stretch. Activists have been on the street for 1-2 days each week for the last few months, and despite there being 500+ cars passing each hour (we’ve been counting), police aren’t seen.

We *know* this is a problem area, and we can do something about it. Please join us this Friday, we’ll be there from 3-5pm. More details below, and we’ve got plenty of extra signs. Thank you for helping out local animals,

Subject: Another chance to help the deer: "Slow Down for Deer" Demo - this Friday!

Hi everyone,

We are holding another Slow Down for Deer demo this Friday and the deer could really use your help! Here are the details:

Purpose:
1. To encourage drivers to slow down and watch for deer at Oak Bay's highest vehicle/deer collision site; and
2. To pressure Oak Bay to lower the 50 kph speed limit on this stretch of road, patrol it for speeders, and install innovative signage and lighting.

When: Friday, March 7 from 3-5 pm

Where: Cadboro Bay Road across from Uplands Golf Course. Specifically, Cadboro Bay Road between Sharingham (which is just North of Landsdowne), and Cotswold.

Parking: There is free street parking available on either side of the road at this section of Cadboro Bay Road.

Signs: Please bring a sign if you can, but we usually have extras, so don't let not having a sign stop you from coming!

Tips for signs - please consider that our audience will be moving past us at speeds of 50-70 kph and we want them to be able to see what our signs say, without of course distracting them. Therefore, large signs (approximately two feet by three feet), on white (or a neon colour) with black lettering are probably best. Limiting the text to approximarely two to four words makes the signs readable.

Examples of signage wording:

EXPECT Deer!
Caution: Deer Crossing!
#1 Deer Collision Site!

Clothing recommendations: WARM, light-coloured, and waterproof.

Something warm to drink would also not go amiss :)

Jordon will be there at 3:00 to interview the brave and willing and I'll be inviting the media to this one.

This demo will be held in honour of the doe we tried to help last Friday. We DID however safely chaperone two deer across the road during our last demo, which is proof we were in the right place at the right time.

I hope you will come and please let anyone you know who might be willing to come out for the deer know about this!

Thank you,
Amanda
