If statements

I am teaching myself to code and I can not figure out the if statements in html for anything. I am trying to make a little game and I need the if statements. The basic layout is a welcome type your name then hit submit. After submission  I want it to go to a set of questions and then you will submit to get your score. Please Help and in advance thank you.
