Hi guys,
I can't get Arabic to show up correctly. I have tried lots of different setups. The best I came up with was using the Spanish preset & changing the ordering language to Arabic. I have no idea why this works. However, I am just getting started, & I think if I leave it on Spanish it will cause coding problems later. I have no idea why the Arabic writing system with an Arabic keyboard gives white squares. (Same thing if use English.) Spanish writing system with Arabic keyboard gives Arabic text, and it exports okay. Is there any reason that it must be set to Arabic?

Btw, I used FLEx on a different computer with no problems with Arabic—now I am using a Lenovo with Windows 10 & the newest stable version. I have already uninstalled & re-installed. I also have multiple Arabic keyboards and have teied several.

Hi Mark,

If you're seeing boxes, the problem is most like that the font doesn't
support the characters typed.

Mark,
To follow up on what Ann has said, try Times New Roman, or Scheherazade font
from SIL website. The number of fonts that will have the UNICODE code points
for Arabic will be limited.

And an explanation for why Spanish would work for you and not Arabic might be that in your project, Spanish is set to use a different font than Arabic is, and the font that is set for Spanish happens to have those codepoints in it.

Try Format/Set Up Writing Systems. Then select Arabic and click Modify. Then go to the Font tab. See what font is set. (It may be the case that it is trying to use a font that you don’t have installed. In that case, it would have “Missing: “ prepended to the name of the font it is trying to use.) As Jeff said, try Times New Roman or Arial or a font designed for Arabic, or download Scheherazade or Lateef from http://scripts.sil.org

You could do the same thing just to see what font is set for Spanish or English or any other writing system you have.
