Hi,

I tried to create a new project for Gondi language which is a south-central language in India. However, the process could not be completed because Gondi seems to not included in the ethnologue list provided in FLEx. The ethnologue code of Gondi is gon which can be accessed on https://www.ethnologue.com/language/gon . Please help us in this regard. The following error was flashed before language explorer closed:

Hi Mayank,

Actually "Gondi" is an entire family of languages (plural) spoken in the central tribal belt of India.

The ethnologue shows "gon" as the macro language code to cover all the different Gondi languages, but when building a database in FLEx, you need to know WHICH of the (approximately) 10 Gondi languages you are using (gno, esg, wsg, etc.)

I know that there is a movement to unite the group and create a "standardized" Gondi dictionary", but even so, the entries will be different for each language (or dialect) of Gondi. So I am guessing that you will need to add multiple Gondi writing systems to adequately capture (and yet keep separate) the various languages/dialects.

Otherwise it would be like trying to make something called a "standardized Dravidian dictionary" which attempts to include and standardize all the words in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam!

Please feel free to ask for further clarification if needed.

Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Sorry for the late reply. Actually, I discontinued with working on the Gondi project. When I was contacted for this project, I tried to create a project for Gondi. However, they seemed to have used some other method/software to develop their dictionary. Anyway thanks for your suggestions and clarification.

Mayank
