Hello all,

Our little band of developers (a dev lead and 3 developers, with help from 3 other developers for a period) have been busy since FieldWorks 8.3.9 was released. We are working to prepare the next major release, FW 9.0.

Here is what you will see when we release the alpha version of the product in the not too distant future:

1. 64-bit Windows support - our really large projects will work on Windows again.
2. A new installer that is patchable - This means updates will be much smaller when the major release is out. This should help folks who have limited internet connectivity.
3. Improvements to Linux packaging
4. Translation Editor and DB4 (legacy pieces) are totally removed from the product - cleaner code and more maintainable for the team
5. Updated Writing System support - Updated LDML (locale data) format and numerous Writing System related issues fixed.
6. Fixing crashes and critical bugs.

NOTICE: We will only support Windows 7 and newer with the FieldWorks 9.0 release. Time to upgrade OS version if you are still running Windows XP or Windows Vista.

Best regards,
Paul Nelson
Acting Fieldworks Product Owner

P.S. - Beth Bryson will begin a new role with the SIL Intl Dictionary and Lexicography Services team next Monday. She should still be hanging around on the FLEx list and helping out as she is able (or desires). Please join me in thanking Beth for her years of contribution to FieldWorks and wishing her well in her new role.

We appreciate the massive amount of work you do, in spite of limited personnel resources. It can't be easy to keep up with operating system changes and user feature requests. You have our admiration and gratitude for a great product.
Thanks,
Ron Moe

This sounds like great improvements, but unfortunately, I feel quite stuck (as I told you, Paul, a couple of months ago).

I would really like to move my current Toolbox dictionary to FLEx, as it seems to have many great features. However, if I do that, I can no longer parse my data, for which I really need autosegmental tone parsing (as currently implemented in the CARLA suite with ToneParse). I still have lots of data to enter into my dictionary, but I'm rather reluctant to continue in Toolbox.

Any chance to get
autosegmental tone parsing in FLEx in the not too distant future? I'm very willing to help as much as I can in the development, answering the many questions that will certainly come up, doing alpha/beta testing, etc.

Thank you very much for considering this.

Dear Beth,

I gladly join Paul - in a much smaller and remote way - to thank you for
all your gracious input and help on this list. Thank you for patience
with us users when we got pushy and felt "our show had to go on" in
spite of real technical problems. Thank you for all your unseen work
behind those scenes, I do not even want to know all that has to happen
to run such a big one.

All the best for your next steps - we will probably cross threads again.

And greetings and a thank-you nod to the developers; keep keeping.
Fieldworks is appreciated - and every week you do not hear from our
office means "all is well, database slowly growing".

Good weekend you all,

Martin
