Dear all,

Is it possible to change the order of fields in the lexical entry? I see that they do not appear alphabetically, so I am wondering if it is possible to customize the order.

in which view are you wanting to change the order?  For printing/dictionary then configure the dictionary. (search help)  otherwise give a little more specifics.

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for your reply and info.

How about changing the order in the entry part of the lexicon edit view?

Hanna

Hi Hanna,

A picture is worth 1,000 words. Can you share something that helps us visualize what you mean?

Paul

I believe you cannot reorder those.  you can make them hidden or not hidden by default.  you click on the blue arrow next to a field to change its view-ability.

Jonathan Dailey has it right. You can't change the Entry/ Sense fields editing view order.

On my Christmas Ideas List for FLEx, Paul Nelson, is to make the Lexicon Edit fields reflect the current order and/or checked boxes view of the Dictionary configuration. Then as someone is working on a particular saved dictionary it would reflect the desired fields in the Editing fields view in the right pane. I know the dictionary view above the Entry Edit fields is there and is helpful. The right click over the fields idea is great for configuring, but it is in a paragraph format, and it is impossible to right click over a missing field.  Since the editing fields are in a downward list, one could scroll down and observe fields available for editing.

I would still like an option to leave the order in a default view as it currently is, since that makes it easier to learn and remember where the fields to edit are. I find the make-fields-visible options process a bit cumbersome. The Show Hidden Fields option checkbox is great. There is some empty real estate by that box. Could we have a checkbox that says Show Always-Visible fields? Perhaps another for Show Fields-with-Data checkbox, and  one for Show No-Data-In-fields. Maybe that can be done with Bulk-Edit-Visibility tool, or a toggle visibility or a select all visibility box similar to the columns checkboxes in Bulk Edit? How about an Edit checkbox for Show-Configured-Dictionary fields? Shorter names would likely be needed. Or maybe a new Lexicon view for Configuring Dictionary and/or Configuring Editing, and/or making fields visible/hidden would be easier. Or perhaps a blending of configuring with editing?

Just ideas,

Marlin
