Some students from the Australian National University (ANU) are interested in the lexicon. I'm wondering what is the best way to send them that data.

I thought Language Forge would be ideal, but there is no observer role there to keep others from editing or (more likely) accidentally changing data. My next thought was to use Webonary. I see that the Kamasau language is able to download to a smart phone, and the Lau language has PDF, EPUB, and DictionaryForMIDs formats, but I'm thinking these formats will be not easy to access with a computer program.

FLEx does have export to XHTML, XML, SFM, and LIFT. I'm currently thinking this would be the best option, and have sent off a message asking them if any of these are interest. But I'm wondering if I'm missing anything.

typically a whole back up is sent to a new collaborator... but the question to ask is: will this new collaborator be adding content to the ongoing development of the data set, or will they be forking the data set  with no intention of later merging the data sets?

Hi Steve,

Actually, Language Forge is designed to be able to share your lexicon like you are wanting.  Language Forge *does* have an Observer role.  I've created a How To article here that explains how to share your Language Forge lexicon with someone in a read-only fashion.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, Hugh. The students want to do a comparative study to discover the "linguistic history of the region", rather than collaborate.

Hi Steve,

Are the students wanting to compare various languages? Or, just study one language.

Hi Chris,

When I checked Language Forge's user management a week or so ago, I'm pretty sure the role was "Obs. Do not use."  I just tested it now, and it's not there anymore. I'm guessing a coder was working on it.

Anyway, I've tested it again just now, and user management looks to have a security hole. The new user is automatically assigned contributor. That means the user can potentially change some data until the project manager changes the role to observer. One fix is to automatically assign the new user the observer role, instead of contributor. I can think of another fix or two, but now I'm straying into software developer mode...

Hi Paul,

The students want to do a comparative study to discover the "linguistic history of the region", rather than collaborate. More specifically, they are looking at the languages around the Mt. Bosavi region of PNG. The Edolo language lexicon is already on Language Forge, but I doubt many of the other Bosavi languages are.

Hi Steve,

Language Depot and Language Forge are easy to get confused.  When I replied to your question, I assumed that you were referring to Language Forge, as that's what you wrote.  It's clear to me that you are talking about Language Depot, the send/receive server.  You are correct.  Flex send/receive using Language Depot never implemented an Observer role.

As I said in my previous email, Language Forge does have an Observer role and does what you're trying to do as far as I can see.  Let me know if you have questions after you've taken a look at Language Forge.

Chris,

Actually, I did mean Language Forge, and I'm looking at the screen now. I must have checked the Language Depot user management before. As you wrote, the two are easy to get confused.

There is still the issue with Language Forge automatically assigning the role to contributor I wrote about in my last message.

Hi Steve,

You have discovered a bug in LF that needs to be fixed.  As a work around please ask the students to register first on the site, then you add them via their email to the project as a second step.  In this way, you can change their role instantly to Observer.  You can report bugs to iss...@languageforge.org and we will track them on JIRA.

Thanks,

Chris
