I love the way you can add pictures to senses in the lexicon. Is there any way to go from a lexicon for which some entries have pictures to an illustrated dictionary for printing?

I have seen quite a variety of formats for illustrated dictionaries. What exactly do you have in mind? With Flex you can select a set of entries to be included and then export a dictionary with pictures but often what people have in mind is aimed at children with a very different page format. Something like this might be more likely with Bloom. It should be possible to transform Flex output into a Bloom book format but right now, this is not an automated process.

Toby,

From your question, I'm not sure if you are aware of Pathway (http://pathway.sil.org). With Pathway you can export the dictionary with pictures to Open Office for printing.

I'm not aiming at children for this, and I'm not worried too much about the way its formatted at this stage, I just need something printable. You say Flex can export something like this? Can you tell me exactly how to get Flex to do it? I've looked in tools -> configure -> dictionary but I can't see the picture field listed among the checkable options.

I've heard of Pathway, but I think it requires Windows. I'm using Flex on Linux.

My mistake, Pathway 1.12.0 Sprint has a Linux version available, though it's not considered stable. I'll give it a try.

Happily I've got Pathway working in Linux and it appears to be really useful in presenting a lot more formatting option, for example making the dictionary 2 columns to the page, etc. But I'm still no closer to getting the illustrations in. The content of the dictionary is still whatever I select from the configure dictionary dialogue, but I can't see in there anywhere to include the illustrations.

Any more suggestions?

I looked at one dictionary where the pictures were showing and in the Configure Dictionary View, they had selected Pictures (under the main entry) and within pictures they had selected Thumbnail and Caption. It may be the caption should be selected.

It is not essential to select senses.
In Configure dictionary go to Senses. At the very end you find pictures. As Greg said, select pictures. That should do it provided you have pictures inserted. They should be visible under the relevant sense of a given entry.

It was there all along! I was assuming the pictures option would be listed under senses because you add the pictures to the senses, but it was the last option in the main entry list. I didn't see it there until now. Now it's working fine. Thanks!
