Hi, all.

We are finally nearing the time when we will have an alpha version of the "Streamlining Dictionaries" work in FLEx. We are still several weeks away from that, but when we get there, we will need Real Users to try it out and let us know what further work we need to do before we start releasing beta versions. Might you be one of them?

The idea with this alpha version is this:

- We want a small group of users who will commit to (a) using it and (b) communicating with us. It will not be freely downloadable; it will only be available to this group. Once we get to beta versions, those will be more generally available.

- For the alpha, we plan to not involve a data migration. That is, you will be able to open the same databases with the alpha version and with the current stable version of FieldWorks. (Actually, FW 8.0.4 through 8.2.4 can all open the same databases, as it happens. But that is not usual.) By delaying the data migration until later versions, we hope that will make it easier to be an alpha tester now.

- The alpha will definitely not be feature complete. However, we have made a significant rearchitecture of the
Configure Dictionary dialog and capability. Because that is such a core feature of FLEx, we want as much user testing as possible, to flush out issues we have not found in our own testing.

- The key new feature of the rearchitecture of this area is that the previews of the dictionary will be using the same code as your XHTML export, and thus will look exactly the same. This will make it much easier to set things up for publication. (This applies to the main dictionary and the reversals.)

- The other key feature is the command someone asked about on this list the other day: Publish to Webonary. It will indeed be possible to upload your dictionary to webonary.org with a single command, once you have an account and have things set up. This feature will be in the alpha.

I hope that has whetted your appetite. If you are interested in being an alpha tester, please write to me off-list, and I will contact you when we get to that point.

Dear Beth,

I may be interested, but I've been holding my breath for a paradigm list feature, e.g. for each lexeme, allow users to create a small paradigm of the different word forms. Currently, I have to list forms as variants and these are just "dumped" after the entry in the lexicon. I won't get into how the phonology assistant doesn't work here (most of my variants are tonal allomorphs of stems and tone is marked with a number), but I've really been dying for a feature like this. "Variants" is really a deficient way to provide a paradigm and there is currently no way in FLEx to provide free variants of items in a paradigm (a true variant of a "variant"). If FLEx 8.3 includes a paradigm feature, I'd be a guinea pig for testing.

Hi Beth,

I've got a dictionary that I'm uploading to Webonary. I'll be happy to
provide some feedback on the new tool.

I do send/receive with a lot of teams. Will using the alpha version create
any problems?

Best wishes,

Richard

Hi Beth,

I am interested in using the alpha version, especially as I don't have to
migrate the data.

We will not have a paradigm feature in this version.  We know it is sorely needed, and we do have plans to address that at some point, but it is not within scope for the current project.

Hi Beth,

We have four computers that need to do S/R sync and I am uploading to Webonary. I need to have sort, editing, and checking features. As long as 8.3 alpha can handle that I am willing to be an alpha tester.

Hi Beth,

I would he happy to join the experiment group for Fieldwork 8.3. I have a sizable amount of data from personal research as well as from students assignments on Flex. The idea behind Flex is to be able to publish these databases online in form of dictionaries and wordlist for minority languages of Cameroon.

Looking forward to more information on this experiment.

Hi,

I am working on a conversion from a Unicode Toolbox lexicon database with 15,000+ entries. After cleaning things up a bit in SOLID I tried the SFM import tool for FLEx, mapped everything as best as I could, but it yielded only about 444 imports. I tried converting it to a LIFT file. The import of this went well, however the 2000+ subentries did not get carried over.

Whom might I speak with regarding some help with this?

Thanks,

I have imported quite a few Toolbox databases in the past, so if nobody else is available would be willing to have a look at your file, .

Stevan,

The very flat nature of Toolbox databases can make subentries  a difficult.  Can you send me a few of your typical entries off list?  Maybe I can give you some advice on how to get more than 444 entries to import.

I’ve been working on this import. The primary failure is a bug (LT-15281) that causes the import to silently abort if there is an \xe field without a preceding \xv field and it comes after \lx or \se but before it gets into a sense.
